Toyota continues to introduce more special edition models at a rapid pace. The latest vehicle to join the special edition craze is the 2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade Edition. With the introduction of the Prius Nightshade Edition, the electrified vehicle becomes the 11th model in the automaker’s lineup to be given the blacked-out treatment. It’s also the first hybrid model to get the all-black-everything upgrade.

Just like with the other Nightshade Edition models, opting for the 2022 Prius Nightshade Edition nets you a sharp-looking hybrid with an all-black appearance package. The wheels, mirror caps, badges, door handles, and headlight accents are all finished in black. The model will be available in three colors: Super White, Midnight Black Metallic, and Silver Metallic. On the inside, the hybrid features heated and power-adjustable seats that are finished in Toyota’s SofTex upholstery. A heated steering wheel, semi-gloss black trim pieces, and chrome door handles are also included. Standard features on the Nightshade Edition include a 7-inch touchscreen, six audio speakers, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa compatibility, satellite radio, and Wi-Fi hot spot.

Toyota will offer the Nightshade Edition with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Models that put power down to the front wheels come with 15-inch wheels, while AWD models have 17-inch wheels. The Prius’ powertrain goes unchanged, as the hybrid will still come with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that makes up to 96 horsepower. Without any changes, we expect the Prius Nightshade Edition to be able to get up to 52 mpg combined.

Pricing for the 2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade Edition hasn’t been announced yet, so we don’t know where the new trim level will sit in the lineup. We think it could sit between the LE and XLE trims and cost somewhere around $27,000. Toyota only plans to make 3,400 Night Editions of the Prius and they’ll go on sale later this fall.

Unsurprisingly, there aren’t many other all-black hybrids on sale. Automakers tend to focus on aerodynamic designs, efficient powertrains, and clever packaging to make them as efficient as possible. Few actually worry about making hybrids look good. So, up against the Honda Insight, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, and Kia Niro, the Prius Nightshade Edition has something the others don’t – a cool design.
