The cheapest versions of the Ford F-150 Lightning truck are already sold out. According to a bulletin sent to dealers yesterday, the work-oriented Lightning Pro and the mainstream XLT trucks are now sold out for the 2022 model year. This may leave new buyers with no choice but to consider a nearly $70,000 configuration.

In its letter to dealers, Ford says that the 2022 F-150 Lightning Pro Standard-Range Battery as well as the XLT configurations "are currently sold out for retail customers." If you missed out on the company's Lightning EV reservation process, this may result in having to wait for 2023 F-150 Lightning orders to open.

Although the F-150 Lightning isn't reportedly due to launch until April 26th, the fact that the cheapest trucks have already sold out could be disappointing. On paper, the entry-level Lightning Pro is designed for commercial customers but can be ordered by a regular consumer and has an MSRP of $41,769 before incentives.

Without the option to buy a Pro or an XLT, this could leave consumers just the Lariat and Platinum to order at this time. Just for reference, the F-150 Lightning Lariat has a sticker price of $69,269. That's $14,500 more than the $54,769 MSRP of the cheapest XLT and $27,500 more than the least-expensive Lightning Pro.

Interestingly, Ford seems to have left the door open for potential Lightning Pro and XLT buyers with an existing reservation, stating "as commodities become available, future invitations for currently sold-out models" will take into account reservation holders who chose an option called "Extend My Reservation."

If you're looking to get a deal, shoppers should be aware that F-150 Lightning residual values are worse than the regular F-150 but that Ford is already offering a lease-like EV financing option that could be a good deal. However, unlike most vehicles, dealers are forbidden from listing the F-150 Lightning under MSRP.

4/22/22 Update: Ford has stopped taking orders for all 2022 F-150 Lightning trims.
