When Fiat killed the gas-powered 500 and brought it back as an all-electric city car, the automaker didn’t say anything about the possibility of introducing a model with an internal combustion engine. Well, it turns out that Fiat will offer the new 500 as a hybrid model, as Stellantis has confirmed the news, reports Automotive News Europe. Unfortunately, we don’t know if the new 500 Hybrid will be available in the U.S.

According to the report, the 500 Hybrid will be built at Stellantis’ Miafiori plant in Turin, Italy starting in 2026. With Fiat choosing to only offer the new version of the 500 as the all-electric 500e, hearing about the introduction of a new 500 Hybrid is surprising. Fiat, though, does offer a hybrid version of the last-gen Fiat 500 in other markets outside of the U.S. So, this could simply be Fiat’s way of updating an older vehicle. Automotive News Europe’s report, though, points to some other reasons for Fiat choosing to come out with a new 500 Hybrid.

The first reason is because of the current decrease in EV sales. Automakers have been caught off-guard by the drop in electric car sales and many have announced plans to switch their focus to electrified options like hybrids and plug-in hybrids. As an all-electric car with roughly 150 miles of range, the 500e’s appeal is limited to urbanites in the U.S. With a starting price tag of $34,095, the 500e doesn’t offer a lot of value for its performance, either. The introduction of a more affordable hybrid model would boost the 500’s appeal.

The second reason is due to requests from union reps who had asked Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares to boost production at Fiat’s Mirafiori factory. Union representatives had asked Stellantis for Fiat to make a more affordable model that could be a high-volume vehicle. A new 500 Hybrid fits the bills and will be built at the same place as the 500e.

The decision to come out with a new 500 Hybrid also comes at a time when Fiat is attempting to improve its standing with the Italian government. Recently, Fiat has come under scrutiny from the government because of reduced manufacturing figures in the country and because of the automaker’s decision to produce some of its vehicles outside of Italy. Stellantis, which includes Alfa Romeo and Fiat, is one of the few large automotive brands based in Italy.

Specifications and information on what kind of powertrain the 500 Hybrid will have aren’t available yet. And again, we don’t know if Fiat will offer the model in the U.S., though we can see the vehicle being a popular choice if it’s priced accordingly. In addition to confirming the 500 Hybrid, Stellantis also confirmed that it will start building the Jeep Compass Hybrid at its Melfi plant in Italy.
