The cheapest Ford Mustang Mach-E has managed to undercut the Kia EV6. As CarsDirect reported this week, the 2023 Kia EV6 will start at just under $50,000. Today, we learned that Ford has resumed taking orders on the Mach-E Select, a base trim that happens to be $1,600 cheaper than the most-affordable EV6.
In a major change in packaging, the cheapest EV6 was discontinued for 2023, resulting in a $7,100 base price increase. The most affordable 2023 EV6 is now the Wind trim with an MSRP of $49,795. It's also worth noting that the EV6 no longer qualifies for a $7,500 tax credit after the Inflation Reduction Act was signed.
In contrast, the cheapest 2023 Mustang Mach-E is the Select at $48,195. That's $1,600 less than the EV6. Given the likelihood that the Mach-E may remain eligible for the tax credit, the cost to buy one could be up to $9,100 cheaper than the EV6. Orders for the Mach-E Select recently resumed after a month-long pause.
It's also worth noting that the 2023 Mach-E Select has a range of 247 miles with the Standard Range battery, whereas the EV6 Wind gets 310 miles. To approach the EV6, you'd have to upgrade to a Mach-E Premium with the optional Extended Range Battery (306 miles). At that point, the MSRP balloons to $64,875.
If you're comparing the EV6 and Mach-E, we suggest making an apples-to-apples comparison. In addition to offering more range in base form, the 2023 EV6 may be easier to find. After all, Ford is currently quoting a wait of up to 35 weeks for new Mach-E Select orders, putting delivery well into the summer of 2023.
As we discovered this week, EV6 buyers may have other factors to consider for 2023. The EV6 is now over $7,000 more expensive than the Hyundai IONIQ 5. Additionally, the higher base price has exceeded the $45,000 MSRP cap of the California Clean Vehicle Rebate, disqualifying it from the $2,000 incentive.
