Last fall, Jeep came out with the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid SUV. The automaker claimed the PHEV SUV would be just as capable as the gas- and diesel-powered versions of the Wrangler, but offer 22 miles of all-electric range for consumers looking to be a little friendlier to nature. Following the launch of the Wrangler 4xe, Jeep is now looking to introduce a network of electric-vehicle charging stations at off-road trails so owners can go off-roading on nothing but electricity.

Jeep’s upcoming EV charging network is being built in partnership with Electrify America and is called the Jeep 4xe Charging Network. The first charging stations will be installed at iconic Jeep vehicle trails, including Moab, Utah; Rubicon Trail, in Pollock Pines, California; and Big Bear, California. They’ll become available later this spring and have Level 2 charging capability. For Wrangler 4xe owners, they’ll be able to fully recharge the SUV’s battery pack in roughly two hours. Jeep owners will be able to use the chargers for free through a mobile app.

More EV charging stations will come out in the next 12 months along Jeep Badge of Honor off-road trailheads across the country. At the moment, there are 56 trailheads around the United States. Jeep is looking to have more charging stations become operational by the end of the year.

Unlike other charger networks, Jeep’s 4xe Charging Network is specifically aimed at Wrangler 4xe owners and future all-electric Jeeps. For consumers behind the wheel of Jeep’s plug-in hybrid SUV, the upcoming charging network will give them the ability to charge their SUV before going off-roading. Jeep won’t be the only automaker to have charging stations. Rivian recently announced plans to come out with chargers in unique locals that include more remote locations.

The Wrangler 4xe is a serious off-roader. It’s powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors for a combined output of 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Those figures best the majority of the Wrangler’s other engines except for the 6.4-liter V8 engine. Jeep fits the Wrangler 4xe with a 17-kWh battery pack that has an all-electric range of 22 miles. Additional off-road features include solid Dana 44 axles, 10.8-inches of ground clearance, a two-speed transfer case, and 30 inches of water fording ability. Pricing for the Wrangler 4xe starts at $49,490 including destination.
