Ford once had the high-performance pickup truck segment to itself with the F-150 Raptor. Then, Ram came out with the even-more powerful Ram 1500 TRX, beating Ford at its own game. And now, the segment is getting another option with the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2. While Chevrolet has provided some information on the Silverado ZR2’s specifications, the automaker has stayed quiet on pricing. GM Authority reports that Chevy’s high-performance full-size truck will start at $66,795 with destination.

That price tag puts the Silverado ZR2 directly into the F-150 Raptor ($65,840) and 1500 TRX’s ($72,120) crosshairs. We’re not surprised to see the 1500 TRX cost more than the ZR2. That pickup truck is a high-speed, Baja-style off-roader with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine making 702 horsepower. Even compared to the F-150 Raptor, the 1500 TRX is a different animal. We are, though, surprised to see the Silverado ZR2 cost more than the F-150 Raptor.

The F-150 Raptor comes with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 450 horsepower. It, just like the 1500 TRX, is meant to be a pickup truck that can fly over dunes and hit triple digits over sand. The Silverado ZR2 isn’t as extreme as the other two trucks, nor is it as powerful. To see it cost $955 more than the F-150 Raptor is a bit of a head-scratcher.

While the Silverado ZR2 may not be the value option we hoped it would be, it does come with a lot of off-roading features. The pickup features the same 6.2-liter V8 engine that’s found in other Silverado trucks and carries a rating of 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case. Electronic locking differentials are at the front and back.

Beyond the engine, the Silverado ZR2 features 18-inch wheels, chunky 33-inch off-road tires, and specially tuned suspension. The suspension is the most interesting part of the pickup truck, as they’re Multimatic DSSV spool-valve shocks that are matched to springs that give the truck a two-inch lift. In total, the pickup has 11.2 inches of ground clearance for some serious off-roading. Chevy also includes a Terrain mode that acts as an off-road cruise control system, a relocated exhaust system, and removable end caps for the front bumper.

If the pricing holds, the Silverado ZR2 would become the most expensive pickup truck in the lineup. The Silverado 1500 High Country with the 6.2-liter V8 and four-wheel drive costs $62,590. With the pricing, we’re interested to see how the Silverado ZR2 does in terms of sales compared to the F-150 Raptor and 1500 TRX. Our initial gut reaction is to say that it won’t do well, as buyers can get similar off-roading capability with cheaper options like the Ram 1500 Rebel and Ford F-150 Tremor.
