The Jeep Gladiator is set to receive a massive price hike for 2022. Based on data derived from Jeep's latest order guide, the rugged pickup will see as much as a $2,020 price increase on most trims. However, a closer look finds that a key change in standard equipment may explain the reason for the higher price tags.

In base form, the 2022 Gladiator Sport is listed at $36,910 including a destination charge of $1,595. That's $355 more than the current MSRP of $36,555. As before, that only gets you an entry-level truck with a 6-speed manual transmission. For 2022, choosing the optional 8-speed automatic brings the pricing to $38,910.

Although modest year-over-year price changes aren't surprising, other trims will be a lot more expensive. For example, the 2022 Overland has an MSRP of $47,015, which is $2,020 more than the previous price of $44,995. The Mojave and Rubicon are up by the same amount and will both start at $50,855.

Fortunately, there may be a good reason for the changes. With the Overland trim, buyers will now get an 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C navigation system. In the truck's current form, that's a $1,995 option that brings the MSRP to $46,990. Taking that into account, the actual year-over price increase comes out to just $25.

While getting more standard tech could make sense, it does take away the ability to choose a cheaper truck. That may not be ideal for shoppers, especially if you're not a fan of in-car nav systems. For reference, current Overland trucks come with a 7-inch system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A Jeep spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
