Subaru is adding a new Onyx Edition to the 2022 Ascent’s lineup. Beyond that change, the midsize SUV carries over unchanged for the new model year. Without any noteworthy changes, beyond the new trim, pricing for the 2022 Ascent starts at $33,420 (with destination), which is only $75 more than before.

The new Onyx Edition trim brings the Ascent’s lineup to a total of five options. It slots in between the Premium and Limited trims and is only available with a seven-passenger layout. Pricing for the new trim level starts at $39,120 and brings special blacked-out design elements.

Black exterior badges, 20-inch alloy wheels, and Subaru’s StarTex water-repellant upholstery are included with the trim. Standard features over lower trim levels include reverse automatic emergency braking, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power liftgate, remote keyless entry, and push-button start. Subaru will offer the Onyx Edition with one available package that costs $2,200. The package adds navigation, a panoramic moonroof, and a retractable cargo cover.

The new Ascent Onyx Edition joins the lineup as the latest model to get the all-black treatment. Subaru also sells an Onyx Edition of the Outback and will probably introduce a model for the Forester and Crosstrek shortly. The new trim level should help the Ascent be more competitive in the midsize segment, as all-black packages have become popular recently.

Since the Ascent went on sale, it’s done fairly well. 2019 was the Ascent’s best year, as Subaru sold 81,958 units of the SUV in that year. Last year, 67,623 Ascents were sold. which means it outsold competitors like the Nissan Pathfinder (48,579 units) and Mazda CX-9 (27,638 units) weren’t as popular as the Ascent.
