With the redesigned 2021 Toyota Sienna, the Japanese automaker went in a new direction. The automaker gave the minivan a sharp design and an available XSE trim that brings a sport-tuned suspension and available 20-inch wheels. Now with the 2022 model year, Toyota’s looking at tackling another frontier – going off-roading. The 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Special Edition arrives with all-wheel drive, increased ground clearance, and a rugged design to let owners go on outdoor adventures.

This is the first time we’ve seen a Woodland Special Edition from Toyota and it's surprising since minivans aren’t seen as rugged, off-road vehicles. Toyota’s trying to change that by giving the Woodland Special Edition some nice-to-have features. The special edition comes with all-wheel drive and an additional 0.6-inches of ground clearance. The rugged Sienna also has a 3,500-pound towing capacity, which matches other models in the minivan lineup.

While all-wheel drive and some extra ground clearance will help drivers tackle the majority of light trails, the Sienna Woodland Special Edition also adds roof rails with crossbars and a 1,500-watt power outlet for added versatility. Additional features on the special edition minivan include black badges, 18-inch wheels, dark chrome accents, black sport seats with unique stitching, and an exclusive Cement paint job. Of course, the Sienna still comes with a variety of convenience features that include a 12-speaker JBL audio system, heated front seats, the brand’s Split and Stow third row of seats, and kick-to-open sliding doors.

Toyota Sienna

The Woodland Special Edition comes with the same hybrid powertrain as other Sienna models. That means power comes from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with two electric motors and a battery pack. Combined output is rated at 243 horsepower.

Toyota didn’t announce pricing for the 2022 Sienna Woodland Special Edition yet, so we can’t say whether the changes are worth the money. Since the Woodland Special Edition doesn’t bring that many unique touches, we think it will slot in between the Limited ($47,875 with destination) and Platinum ($51,075) trims.

We’ve seen quite a few special editions from Toyota recently. The automaker came out with the Tacoma Trail Special Edition and Nightshade Special Edition, 4Runner Trail Special Edition, Corolla Hatchback Special Edition, Tundra Trail Special Edition, 4Runner Venture Special Edition, Corolla Apex Edition, and Land Cruiser Heritage Edition all within the past two model years. We haven’t seen any special edition Sienna’s recently, so the Woodland Special Edition brings something unique to the minivan.

Consumers have more choices than ever before when it comes to off-road and adventure packages. Recently, we’ve seen Ford introduce an Off-Road Tremor package for both the Ranger and Super Duty pickup trucks, while Subaru has come out with the 2022 Outback Wilderness – the most rugged and capable Outback the brand has ever made. As more and more consumers look to take their vehicles off-road, more automakers are coming out with vehicles that are ready to get dirty.
