Earlier this year, reports indicated that BMW was looking into discontinuing the Z4 sports car. Based on the automaker’s official announcement about pricing and changes for the 2023 model, we’re happy to report that the convertible will be around for at least another year. The bad news is that the 2023 BMW Z4 is getting more expensive for the new model year.
BMW will continue to offer the Z4 in sDrive30i and M40i trims for 2023. Pricing for the sDrive30i starts at $53,795, while the M40i costs $66,295 (with the $995 destination fee). Compared to last year, the sDrive30i has gone up $2,900 from the current Z4 price of $50,895 and pricing for the M40i is up $1,600 from $64,695.
The reason for the increase in pricing for the sDrive30i is because BMW has made the M Sport Package standard for the model. The package brings a handful of changes that include updated air intakes, side-sill contouring, Shadowline exterior trim, 18-inch M wheels, an M steering wheel, M Sport suspension, and M Sport seats. Previously, the package was an additional $1,500.
Both Z4 models arrive with an updated front kidney grille, three new metallic paint schemes, available black trim for the headlights, and optional 19-inch wheel designs. The changes are minimal, but at this point, we’re just happy to see the Z4 return for 2023.
BMW introduced the current generation of the Z4 in 2019, so this slight facelift for the 2023 model year is unusual for a vehicle that just came out as a fully redesigned model a few years ago. We think this could be a response to the market, as the number of available convertibles continues to shrink. Outside of premium options, the Z4 only has a few competitors that include the Chevrolet Camaro ($33,995), Ford Mustang ($34,365), Chevrolet Corvette ($73,395), Jaguar F-Type ($77,975), Mazda MX-5 Miata ($28,715), Porsche 718 Boxster ($66,950).
