2024 Toyota GR Corolla

For drivers seeking pure driving pleasure from a hot hatchback, the Toyota GR Corolla is one of the best options on sale. Unfortunately, it’s only available with a six-speed manual transmission, which may dissuade some shoppers from purchasing a model. Apparently, the GR Corolla’s third model year on sale will bring some noteworthy updates, which include an optional 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Drive spotted the changes on the GR Corolla Forum from a user who shared a screenshot of a document that outlines changes for the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla in Canada. The screenshot comes from “the Verified Owners Group” on Facebook. Based on the screenshot, the changes that Toyota will be making for the 2025 GR Corolla is adding a new 8-speed automatic transmission option for the hot hatch.

Other changes include an increase in torque for the turbocharged 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine. Currently, the engine produces 300 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The document claims that torque will be increased to 295 lb-ft for 2025. The GR Corolla will also be getting a revised front bumper design, a new sub-radiator for the Premium trim, a heated steering wheel as standard equipment on the Core, and brake cooling ducts on the Core.

Based on the document, it looks like the new 8-speed automatic transmission will only be available on the mid-level Premium trim. The entry-level Core and range-topping Circuit Edition are expected to be manual-only trims.

With the news coming from a forum, we’re a bit skeptical. Additionally, these changes are for models sold in Canada, so we don’t know if Toyota will make the same changes for models sold in the U.S. Still, an 8-speed automatic transmission would be a great addition for the GR Corolla and would help it appeal to more shoppers.

An automatic transmission would also give the GR Corolla an edge over the Honda Civic Type R, which is only available with a 6-speed manual, and be more competitive with the Volkswagen Golf R that is only available with a 7-speed automatic.
