2024 BMW X4

BMW was the first automaker to kick off the coupe-inspired SUV craze with the X6. The German luxury brand has expanded its roster of sporty SUVs with options like the X2, X4, X4 M, and X6 M. With SUVs constantly growing in size, there’s now a lot of overlap between the X2 and X4, which has BMW rethinking its plan to keep X4 around.

According to a report from Motor1, BMW told the outlet that the X4 won’t get another generation. Apparently, the recently redesigned 2024 BMW X2 is the reason why the automaker is killing off the X4 once the current generation gets to the end of its lifespan. The outlet states that the price gap between the X2 and X4 has narrowed to the point where the automaker doesn’t see a point in keeping both models around.

With the full redesign, pricing for the 2024 BMW X2 increased to $42,995 (including destination), which makes it $13,000 less than the X4 that starts at $55,995. That seems like a large enough difference in pricing to us to keep both around, but BMW doesn’t. Instead, it wants drivers to make the upgrade to the X6 that starts at $75,675 or stick with the X3, which doesn’t have a coupe-inspired design, and costs $47,895.

Beyond pricing, we think size also has something to do with BMW’s decision. The subcompact X2 isn’t all that subcompact anymore. The 2024 model is 179.3 inches long, 72.6 inches wide, and 62.6 inches tall. The X4 is 187.6 inches long, 75.5 inches wide, and 63.8 inches tall. That makes the X4 only 1.7 inches longer and 2.9 inches wide than the X2.

BMW didn’t provide Motor1 with any information on when production of the X4 will come to an end. The outlet believes that the sporty compact SUV won’t last past 2025. With BMW introducing a redesigned X2 for 2024 and a redesigned X3 for 2025, we don’t think the X4 will stick around for long.

While BMW may not have any plans to release a new X4, BMW Blog claims that the automaker will replace the gas-powered model with an all-electric iX4 in 2027. Moving the X4 SUV to be an all-electric model could help it stand out against BMW’s gas-powered SUVs.
