The cheapest car in America will soon get the ax. According to a GM spokesperson, the Chevrolet Spark will officially be discontinued after production ends this summer. The decision will move the brand even closer to a lineup comprised almost entirely of SUVs, trucks, and an all-new generation of electric vehicles.

CarsDirect learned of the Spark's demise today in an email from Chevy spokesman Kevin Kelly, who confirmed the car will be produced through August 2022, at which point it will be phased out. The Spark first arrived in 2013 and saw its last redesign for 2016, which was followed by the higher-riding Spark ACTIV for 2017.

Currently, 2022 Spark prices start at just $14,595 including destination for a base model with manual transmission. The model remains one of the cheapest new cars you can buy. With its demise, price-conscious shoppers may turn to cars like the Nissan Versa (MSRP from $16,055) or Mitsubishi Mirage ($16,125).

Without a replacement, Chevy's cheapest passenger car will become the Malibu. However, with a base price of $24,395, a 2022 Malibu starts $9,800 higher than the cheapest Spark. While Chevy does offer the Trax subcompact SUV, prices start at $22,595, which is $8,000 more than the cheapest Spark.

Interestingly, an electric version called the Spark EV was sold briefly from 2014 to 2016. Despite having a range of just 82 miles on battery power and being limited to sales in a handful of states (CA, OR, MD), the car had a low base price tag of just over $25,000 and was often eligible for unbelievably good lease deals.

While GM is committing heavily to an electric future, its next generation of EVs will center on SUVs and trucks. For example, the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV has a base price of over $110,000. Chevy recently unveiled the first-eve 2024 Silverado EV, as well as the 2024 Equinox EV expected to start at roughly $30,000.

If you're looking to buy an affordable small car from Chevy, the 2022 Spark may be your last chance to do so. Based on manufacturer deals announced today, the model is eligible for 0% APR financing for 48 months through February 28th plus a $750 conquest cash incentive for customers coming from another brand.
