General Motors brought the GMC nameplate back to life with the massive, incredibly powerful, and pricey Hummer EV Pickup and SUV. Despite their gargantuan size and six-figure price tags for some models, GMC has received more than 90,000 reservations for both body styles of the electric vehicle. Demand for the American automaker is so high that GMC has stopped accepting reservations for the all-electric vehicles.
The news comes from the Detroit Free Press, which received a statement from GMC spokesman Mikhael Farah who confirmed the news. In a statement, Farah stated that the automaker has “over 90,000 reservations for both pickup and SUV, and we’re excited to say this incredible demand has led to Hummer EV reservations being fully booked at this time.” Farah told the outlet that reservations for the pickup truck and SUV are split almost 50-50 between the body styles.
Consumers that missed out on a Hummer EV can be a “hand-raiser” and choose to receive updates about the electric cars and their availability. This isn’t the same thing as placing a $100 refundable deposit for a vehicle, but it’s the next best thing now that GMC has stopped accepting orders for the vehicles. We’re sure GMC will reopen its order banks for the Hummer EVs at a later date, but the automaker hasn’t confirmed when that will happen.
Earlier this July, GMC was reportedly building Hummer EVs at a pace of a dozen a day. That’s incredibly slow and would see GMC spend over a decade fulfilling its orders for the vehicle. The issue back then was the limited supply of battery cells that was happening production. Since then, GM has opened a battery cell factory in Ohio with LG Chem. The American automaker is also working on opening two more plants in the U.S. within the next few years. Once these plants become operational, GM should be able to increase the number of Hummer EV it builds.
GMC introduced the 2023 Hummer EV in October 2020 with the range-topping Edition 1 that started at $110,295. That trim sold out in 10 minutes. The Hummer EV SUV became available in April 2021 and was introduced in an Edition 1 model with a price tag of $105,595. It also sold out in 10 minutes. Both body styles are also available in EV3X, EV2X, and EV2 models with the most affordable EV2 carrying a starting price tag just shy of $86,245 and is set to arrive in spring 2024.
Consumers with a reservation are looking at waiting a long time for their EVs to arrive. Earlier this March, GMC stated that reservation holders would probably be waiting until early 2024 before receiving a model because of how many orders the automaker has.
