To enthusiasts, the Toyota GR Yaris is the type of car that comes around once in a decade. The homologation special is a rally-bred machine with a punchy three-cylinder engine, a high-tech all-wheel-drive system, and an aggressive hatchback body style. When Toyota announced the GR Yaris, it was pretty obvious that it wouldn’t be sold in the U.S. Instead, rumors pointed toward a GR Corolla for the U.S. market. In what appears to be the first teaser of many from Toyota, the brand gave us our first hints of the upcoming vehicle, though it’s light on details.

The image that Toyota put out on its Instagram page appears to be from the seat of a regular Corolla. There are a few hidden Easter eggs in the photo that are easy to miss. But if we’re being honest, they’re all speculative.

The first hint is located in the Corolla’s instrument cluster. “G:16” is located right above the speedometer, which could refer to the G16E-GTS turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine that’s found in the GR Yaris. Then, if you draw your attention to the digital screen for the HVAC system, you’ll see the numbers “268.” This figure could allude to the engine’s output, as the GR Yaris produces 268 hp for the Japanese market. Lastly, the navigation system has a road called “GR Four” which we think hints toward the vehicle’s AWD system and Gazoo Racing.

Beyond the little hints, Toyota also included what appears to be a picture of the actual GR Corolla in the background of the teaser image. The vehicle is heavily camouflaged and you can’t get a good look at the car, as it’s too small. We should point out that Toyota used an old press photo for its new teaser and added the hints in. With that being said, we don’t think the interior will look the same for the GR Corolla.

Ever since the GR Yaris made its debut, rumors about an American version have swirled. The GR Corolla is expected to have the same powertrain, AWD system, suspension, and styling as the GR Yaris, but in a package that’s already sold in the country. Back then, Toyota even added to the rumor mill by coming out with a tweet that said: “While GR Yaris isn’t hitting the states…perhaps it’s time the U.S. got a hot hatch to call its own.”

So, we’ve known that Toyota is working on a GR-badged hatchback for the U.S. market for some time, but we haven’t gotten any hints until now. The vehicle is expected to arrive before the end of 2022 and will compete against vehicles like the Honda Civic Type R, Hyundai Veloster N, Volkswagen Golf GTI, and Subaru WRX. We’re sure we’ll get more information on the upcoming GR Corolla as its on-sale date gets closer.
