For the 2023 model year, the Kia Soul receives a facelift that includes an angrier mug and a revised lineup. Kia has simplified the Soul’s lineup for 2023, which includes dropping the X-Line and Turbo trims. That means the optional turbocharged engine has been discontinued, too.

With the decision to discontinue the X-Line and Turbo trims, the 2023 Soul will be available in LX, S, EX, GT-Line, and GT-Line Tech trims. All Soul subcompact SUVs will come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 147 horsepower. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) will be standard on every Soul.

Last year, Kia offered the Soul Turbo trim with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. It was rated at 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. It was a large upgrade over the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder and came with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The turbocharged engine brought far better acceleration but hurt fuel economy.

The old X-Line trim was mostly an appearance package with a more rugged design and roof rails. With Kia deciding to pull the plug on the trim, we suspect that it wasn’t a popular model.

Without the available turbocharged engine, the Soul doesn’t have the grunt to match more powerful subcompact SUVs like the Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, Kia Seltos, and Jeep Renegade.

Beyond discontinuing the X-Line and Turbo trims, as well as the turbocharged engine, all 2023 Souls arrive with an updated design. The subcompact SUV features updated headlights, a new front bumper, a refreshed rear fascia, and revised rear taillights. Kia has also updated the SUV’s wheels.

We expect the 2023 Kia Soul to go on sale later this summer, but Kia hasn’t announced pricing for the vehicle yet. Because of the changes, we expect the 2023 model to cost a little more than the current SUV that’s on sale. Pricing for the Soul currently starts at $20,545 (with destination).
