2024 Volvo S60

SUVs remain king in the U.S. Automakers have shifted their focus toward SUVs and electric vehicles, which leaves little room for sedans. Unfortunately, the push to EVs and SUVs is bringing the demise of the Volvo S60. Production of the Volvo S60, which is one of the most comfortable cars in the compact class, is coming to an end at the end of June. The death of the S60 will leave the S90 as the only sedan in Volvo’s lineup.

"After five years Volvo Cars is ending production of the S60 sedan in Ridgeville, South Carolina at the end of June 2024 for the US and some other markets to focus on the all-new EX90," a Volvo spokesperson told Motor1.

The current S60 sedan that’s on sale was introduced in 2019 as a fully redesigned model. The S60 nameplate spans three generations and the current vehicle was the first iteration of the sedan to be built in the U.S. at the automaker’s plant in Ridgeline, South Carolina. This is also where Volvo builds the all-electric EX90 SUV.

While Volvo is discontinuing the S60 in America, the compact luxury sedan will continue to be sold in other global markets. The models that are sold globally will be built at Volvo’s Daqing factory in China.

Sales of the S60, according to Motor1, have hovered around 10,000 to 12,000 units annually over the past three years. In the S60’s best year, it accounted for less than 20,000 units sold. Competitors like the Lexus IS (22,521 units sold), BMW 3-Series (33,816 units sold), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (32,698 units sold), and Audi A4 (13,550 units sold) all did better than the Volvo S60.

The S60 has struggled to keep up with competitors, which have received tech upgrades, styling updates, and high-performance trims, while the S60 has mostly remained the same. The S60 is available with efficient four-cylinder engines that include a turbo-four that makes 247 horsepower and a plug-in hybrid that combines a turbo engine with an electric motor and battery pack with up to 456 hp. The S60 PHEV has an impressive all-electric range of up to 41 miles.
