What's New
The 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid returns with only a minor facelift. The front fascia have been redesigned, and the suspension has been tweaked to help the ride and handling. For those upgrades, the 2021 model asks an extra $200 over last year.
This Crosstrek is an unusual breed: a plug-in hybrid crossover (gas-only models covered separately). Although electrified powertrains are rapidly gaining popularity, competition is still scarce — the Crosstrek’s biggest rivals are the Toyota RAV4 Prime and the Kia Niro PHEV.
Choosing Your Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
The 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid comes in only one trim. With a starting price of $36,395, it’s significantly more expensive than a gas-powered Crosstrek.
That said, a $4,502 federal tax credit can help soften the blow if you qualify, and the Crosstrek Hybrid remains cheaper than the RAV4 Prime.
Engine Choices
The Crosstrek Hybrid’s namesake powertrain comes in only one configuration. Two motors join a 2.0-liter engine for a total of 148 horsepower, plus a healthy dollop of electric torque. Power is sent to the wheels via CVT, and like any Subaru crossover, every Crosstrek comes with all-wheel drive.
Fuel economy is the star of the show. The plug-in powertrain is good for 17 miles of electric range, which is enough for town errands but well short of the RAV4 Prime’s 42 miles. The EPA assigns a rating of 90 MPGe, or 35 mpg combined under normal circumstances. For a compact crossover, those are excellent numbers.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The 2021 Crosstrek seats five adults, though its compact proportions don’t provide too much room to stretch. The Hybrid gets slightly more rear legroom than gas-powered models, with 36.7 inches.
Unfortunately, the opposite is true with cargo space. While the regular Crosstrek offers up to 55 cubic feet of cargo space, the Hybrid’s batteries leave it with a maximum of 43.1 cu ft.

Safety Features
The Crosstrek Hybrid comes with a full suite of active safety tech. Automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and a rear-seat reminder are all standard.
The Crosstrek adds those features to an impressive safety resume, with a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.
Connectivity
The Hybrid gets the best of the Crosstrek’s tech, which includes an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, a six-speaker sound system, and Wi-Fi compatibility.
The system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation and Harman Kardon sound are on the options list.
Crosstrek Hybrid Base — From $36,395
To match its relatively high price tag, the Hybrid comes with all the luxury Subaru can muster. Seats are upholstered in leather with blue contrast stitching, and the front row is heated. Keyless entry and push-button start come standard. On the outside, 18-inch LED wheels complement adaptive LED headlights.
A single package bundles together the remaining goodies: a power moonroof, navigation, premium sound, and a heated steering wheel, all for $2,500. Aside from the usual dealer-installed accessories, these are the only add-ons available.

If you like the versatility of a plug-in powertrain, consider buying soon — the Crosstrek Hybrid is due to be replaced by an all-electric model in the near future.
