Introduction

What's New

The 2022 Tesla Model S is essentially a carryover from last year while the Long Range model is now simply called the Model S and the highly anticipated high-performance Plaid+ trim has been canceled. Tesla Model S configurations can be subject to mid-year changes to both specs and prices.

Choosing Your Tesla Model S

The 2022 Tesla Model S is now available in two variants. The Model S starts at $101,440 and the Model S Plaid begins at $137,440.

Engine Choices

The base Model S has two motors that achieve a combined 670 horsepower and send power to each axle. Each motor integrates a single-speed transmission. The Plaid trim utilizes three unique electric drive units that are better suited for high-performance demands and generate a combined 1,020 horsepower. The additional motor is located on the rear axle and adds torque-vectoring capability.

Last year saw updates to the battery pack and modules to improve energy efficiencies while a new Track Mode on the Plaid trim seeks to further enhance the thermal stability of the battery pack and motors for more consistent performance over extended periods of hard driving.

Per EPA estimates, the Model S has a range of 405 miles while the Plaid sees 396 miles. Tesla’s Supercharger stations charge at rates up to 250 kW which is good for 200 miles in as little as 15 minutes, according to Tesla. The Model S does not currently include unlimited free charging. Tesla’s 11.5 kW wall-mounted charging unit can charge up to 44 miles per hour when the conditions and battery state of charge are most favorable.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Model S seats five and stretches to 197.7 inches in length, sits 78.2 inches wide, and stands 56.3 inches tall. Those dimensions are similar to the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan but the Tesla has them beat when it comes to interior spaciousness. The Model S provides 35.5 inches of rear legroom, 25 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and an additional five cubic feet under the hood. With the seats folded, the interior can hold 61.4 cubic feet of cargo. Only the much longer Mercedes EQS can offer similar space.

Safety Features

The Model S is equipped with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, blind spot detection, front and rear parking sensors, and offers Full Self-Driving Capability as part of a $12,000 package that includes hands-free highway driving with automatic lane changes, self-parking with remote vehicle summon, and traffic light and stop sign responsiveness.

The 2022 Model S has not been fully rated by NHTSA or IIHS.

Connectivity

The Model S ditched the portrait style infotainment screen last year for a 17-inch high-resolution landscape display and features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, Wi-Fi, and multi-phone Bluetooth connectivity. Wireless phone charging in both rows and USB-C ports are standard as is a 22-speaker 960-watt sound system.

The base trim is well equipped with 19-inch wheels, adaptive air suspension, auto-dimming and power-folding heated mirrors, a power tailgate, a heated windshield, adaptive LED headlights, and proximity entry with phone-as-a-key technology.

Inside, the Model S features black synthetic leather seating with heating for all outboard positions and ventilation and 12-way power-adjustability for the front row. A heated steering wheel/ yoke, a digital gauge cluster, a six-inch infotainment display mounted on the rear of the center console for the rear passengers, tri-zone air conditioning, a tinted glass roof, and ambient lighting are also included.

A cream or white interior is available for $2,000 and 21-inch wheels are offered for $4,500.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid - MSRP From $137,440

The high-performance Plaid model features the drivetrain hardware and software updates and is similarly equipped as the base trim.

CarsDirect Tip

The base trim includes impressive tech, strong acceleration, and a stress-reducing amount of range for a price that can be considered a bargain against its most obvious competitors.
