Highlights:

Toyota Prius Prime Tax Credit

The Toyota Prius Prime is no longer eligible for a federal tax credit since it is built overseas. The change took effect after the Inflation Reduction Act was signed. Fortunately, there's still an important way you can save.

Thanks to a loophole, Toyota can claim a commercial vehicle credit on EV leases. The downside is that Toyota isn't passing on the discount to consumers as lease cash.

Based on our analysis, we believe the brand is instead opting to offer lower lease rates. These may help save money, but there's a good chance that the Prius Prime may be more expensive to lease than competitors.

Toyota Prius Prime EV Rebates

As a plug-in hybrid, the Toyota Prius Prime may qualify for state plug-in rebates depending on where you live.

Following a major redesign, the Prius Prime once again qualifies for the $1,000 Clean Vehicle Rebate in California. Previously, stricter minimum range requires for plug-in hybrids excluded the Prius Prime. Additional savings may be available for low-income applicants.

The California Clean Fuel Reward used to offer a discount based on the Prius Prime's battery size. However, the amount was temporarily reduced to $0 due to funding limits and we don't know if and when it'll come back.

Prius Prime Cheaper To Lease Than Prius

Early lease deals on the redesigned Toyota Prius Prime reveal that it can be cheaper to lease than the Prius. This can likely be attributed to its residual value and a lower lease rate.

Although we think real-world prices could vary based on demand, this could create an opportunity for buyers interested in getting the most for their money on a new hybrid car lease.

Introduction

What's New

The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime benefits from a total redesign that includes a sleek new body, a more conventional interior design, and a significant boost in power. The Prime is the plug-in member of the Prius family of hybrid cars.

Choosing Your Toyota Prius Prime

The new Prius Prime comes in three trim levels: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. Pricing for the Prius Prime starts at $33,445 including destination and reaches $40,265 for the XSE Premium.

Engine Choices

Every Prius Prime is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor. The combined output is 220 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque, enough to completely transform the Prime's performance potential. A continuous variable automatic transmission (CVT) sends power to the front wheels.

Plug-in technology allows the Prius Prime to travel on electricity alone up to 44 miles (SE) or 39 miles (XSE and XSE Premium). EPA efficiency estimates for the Prime aren't available yet, but the regular 2023 Prius is rated at 57 miles per gallon in combined driving — without the benefit of the Prime's electric-only capability.

Recharging the battery takes about 4 hours on a Level 2 home charger.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Prius Prime is a compact hatchback with seating for five. There's 20.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 26.7 cubic feet with it folded. That's a generous amount for a passenger car, but the Prime shouldn't be mistaken for a crossover substitute.

Safety Features

The Prius Prime comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, and automatic high beams. A new feature in the bundle called Proactive Driving Assist provides braking and steering assist heading into curves or when a vehicle or pedestrian is detected ahead.

Front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking cost $35 (not a misprint) on the SE and are standard on the XSE and XSE Premium. Options exclusive to the XSE Premium are a $200 review camera mirror and the Advanced Technology Package, which adds surround-view cameras and an automated parking system for $1,085.

Connectivity

The infotainment system for the SE includes an 8-inch touchscreen, six speakers, six USB ports, satellite radio, and wireless phone Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XSE adds wireless phone charging and a 12.3-inch touchscreen is available for $735. The larger touchscreen is standard on the XSE Premium, along with an 8-speaker JBL sound system. Subscription-based navigation is available on all trims and free for a year on the XSE Premium.

2023 Toyota Prius Prime SE — MSRP From $33,445

The SE offers cloth seating, a heated steering wheel, automatic wipers, LED exterior lighting, push-button start, and driver door proximity key access. The SE rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels with covers. There are no factory options for this trim.

2023 Toyota Prius Prime XSE — MSRP From $36,695

The XSE picks up a SofTex leatherette interior with heated front seats, an eight-power driver seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal home remote. Also standard are 19-inch wheels and proximity key access for all doors and the liftgate. A fixed glass roof costs $1,000, and phone-as-a-key technology is available for $275.

2023 Toyota Prius Prime XSE Premium — MSRP From $40,265

The XSE's options are standard on the XSE Premium, along with a power liftgate, driver memory, and ventilated front seats. Buyers can add heated rear seats ($350) and a solar glass roof that feeds the battery ($610).

CarsDirect Tip

The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime looks and performs lightyears ahead of its predecessor and yet manages to be even more efficient. These newfound virtues are baked into every trim, though the nicely equipped XSE strikes us as the best value.
