2023 BMW XM - Exclusive Ashburn New Car Discounts

The 2023 BMW XM is an all-new large two-row plug-in hybrid crossover with a focus on performance and premium design. It is touted as being the M sub-brand's first dedicated model and will offer limited-edition versions (with even more performance) throughout its lifespan.

The XM is offered in a single trim level and is priced at $159,995.

The XM is a dedicated plug-in hybrid model that incorporates a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with a 25.7 kWh (29.5 kWh gross) battery pack and a motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic. Total power ratings are 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque and an M-tuned all-wheel-drive system and an electronically-locking rear differential are also included. The XM has yet to be rated by the EPA, however, BMW expects it to achieve about 30 miles of electric-only driving – double that of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S e-Hybrid – and 46 MPGe but don’t be fooled as this machine prioritizes performance, not overall efficiency. BMW also estimates a 4.1-second 0-60 mph sprint and a top speed of up to 168 mph (87 mph in electric-only mode).

A 7.4 kW onboard charger allows for a full charge from zero in about 3.25 hours.

Although details are scarce, the upcoming limited-edition Label Red trim is set to debut mid-year with 735 horsepower and 735 pound-feet of torque and wears unique styling details.

The XM is sized at 201.2 inches long which places it about seven inches longer than the X5 (and Cayenne) and a few inches shorter than the X7. It seats five and despite the added footprint over the X5, its focus on styling limits its cargo volume behind the back seat to 18.5 cubic feet which are far less than that of the more practically shaped X5 but not too far off from the X6 and slightly more than in the Porsche coupe crossover. With the seats folded, there are 64.3 cubic feet of space.

The XM is fully equipped with active safety technology such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control with lane centering and lane change assist, collision evasion assist, emergency stop assist, automatic high beams, a surround-view camera, parking assist, speed limit information, and traffic light recognition.

IIHS or NHTSA has not yet rated the new model.

The XM features a curved infotainment display that seamlessly connects with the digital gauge cluster. Its infotainment setup utilizes the latest iDrive 8 system with a remote iDrive controller, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, remote connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and navigation and there are USB outlets, a wireless phone charger, and an AC outlet for charging duties.

A Harman Kardon sound system is standard with 16 speakers and 464 watts of power while a Bowers & Wilkens 20-speaker, 1,475-watt premium system is available for $3,400.

Being the flagship model of the M brand, the XM employs several tricks to achieve its performance targets despite checking in with a 6,000-plus curb weight. The chassis uses aluminum for suspension components and rear subframe, an active sway-bar system, adaptive dampers, rear-axle steering, staggered width 23-inch wheels, and an advanced stability control system to maintain an ideal balance in all conditions.

Contributing to the XM’s bold exterior design are slim LED daytime running lights, adaptive LED headlights with a dark housing, an illuminated grille surround, and gloss black details such as horizontal grille inserts, window trim, body side accent trim that runs from the base of the a-pillar to the d-pillar, angular fender flares, and lower door trim. The rear also receives a gloss black lower bumper trim that houses hexagonal quad exhausts arranged in a stacked configuration, a prominent diffuser insert, and badges with gold trim. The rear glass features two engraved BMW logos in the upper corners while thin horizontal LED tail lights extend past the body side and are dark tinted for a more dramatic effect.

Proximity entry opens up an interior with premium leather M-sport seats with heating, ventilation, and massage, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and armrest, a digital gauge cluster with unique M-specific displays, carbon fiber trim, four-zone climate control, an Alcantara headliner with integrated LEDs that light the panoramic sunroof's prism pattern, extended leather on the dash and upper door trim, and quilted stitching for the seats which, in the rear, extends from the seats into the door panels.

The standard black leather can be upgraded to white or blue leather seats and “vintage” brown leather that covers the dash and upper door panel for $2,500.

The only remaining option is the M Driver’s Package for $2,500 which is enough for a one-day track driving school and a raised top speed.
