What's New
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is all-new with an entirely new look inside and out, a larger body, and a new roster of powertrains that includes gas-only, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid configurations. This redesigned SUV has some similarities in appearance with the Elantra and has a decidedly upscale look compared to past Tucson generations.
Choosing Your Hyundai Tucson
The gasoline-only powertrain is offered in four trim levels. The SE is priced at $26,135, the SEL is $27,685, the N Line is $31,785, and the Limited is $35,885.
The Hybrid model is available in three trims. The base level is Blue costs $30,235, the SEL Convenience is $32,835, and the Limited is $38,535. The Plug-In model is available in Blue and Limited trims, however, pricing has not yet been released.
Engine Choices
Engine Type | Horsepower | Torque | Fuel Economy (Combined) | Battery Capacity |
2.5L 4-Cylinder | 187 hp | 178 lb-ft | 29 (FWD) / 26 (AWD) | N/A |
1.6L 4-Cylinder Turbocharged | 226 hp | 258 lb-ft | 38 (AWD) | 1.49kWh |
1.6L 4-Cylinder Turbocharged | 261 hp | TBD | Est. > 70 MPGe | 13.8 kWh |
The base engine of the Tucson is more powerful than the most powerful engine offered in the 2021 model, and it gets better fuel economy. It is standard with front-wheel drive and offers all-wheel drive for $1,400. The Hybrid and Plug-In models are standard with all-wheel drive.
The Plug-In Hybrid’s battery pack allows for an estimated 28 miles of EV driving and can be recharged in about two hours, courtesy of a 7.2kW onboard charger.
All models are capable of towing up to 2,000 lbs.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Tucson grows significantly in size over last year’s model. It stretches 6.1 inches in length to 182.3 inches, rides on a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase (108.5 inches), and grows 0.6 inches in width to 73.4 inches.
The five-passenger interior makes good use of the larger shell and offers 38.1 inches of front headroom and 39 inches in back. Rear legroom shrinks by about two inches in the Plug-In model from the gas-only and Hybrid’s 41.3 inches.
A similar story plays out in terms of cargo volume which measures 31.9 cubic feet with the seatbacks raised compared to the 38.8 cubic feet otherwise available or 66.3 / 74.5 cubic feet (respectively) with the seats folded.
Ground clearance measures 8.3 inches on the AWD models.
Safety Features
The SE trim equips the Tucson with a basic level of active driving safety features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams.
The SEL trim and Blue trims gain a more advanced version of automatic emergency braking, which can detect bicyclists and on-coming vehicles when turning left through a traffic junction, and additional sensors that provide blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, and safe exit warning. Adaptive cruise control is also standard.
The Limited trim gains an advanced version of adaptive cruise control, parking sensors with automatic braking, a blind view monitor that displays in the digital gauge cluster, a surround-view camera system, and rain-sensing wipers.
The 2022 Tucson has not yet been rated by IIHS or NHTSA but the previous-year model was a 2021 Top Safety Pick and earned a five-star rating so expectations are high for the newly designed model.
Connectivity
The base trim features an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and plays through six speakers. The SEL and Blue trims gain satellite radio, Blue Link telematics, and two rear USB ports to match the front two.
The available Convenience Package adds wireless charging. The N Line and Limited trims gain a Bose premium audio system with an 8-channel amplifier and eight speakers while the Limited trim is the only trim with standard navigation.
The SE trim is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, daytime running lights, and turn signals, and body-colored mirrors and door handles. Inside the driver receives a six-way adjustable seat and a 4.2-inch LCD multi-information display.
Tucson SEL / Blue - From $27,685
The SEL and Blue (Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid) trims are similarly equipped. Over the SE trim, they further receive proximity entry, LED taillights, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, roof rails, and rear tinted glass. The front seats are heated and the driver’s seat is now power operated, while in the back, the passengers gain air vents.
The SEL trim offers the Convenience Package which is $2,600 and includes 19-inch wheels, Hyundai’s digital key, a hands-free power tailgate, and a sunroof. The gauge cluster is upgraded to a hood-less 10.25-inch digital display and the rest of the interior is classed up with ambient lighting, soft-touch door panels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and LED cabin lighting.
With the Convenience Package selected, the $1,700 Premium Package is available and includes leather seats with ventilated front seats, dark chrome emblems, and the 5-light front grille accents that is one of the vehicle’s signature styling features.
The Hybrid Convenience trim, as the name implies, includes the features of the Convenience package as well as a panoramic sunroof but leaves the Premium Package off the table.
The N Line takes the SEL with the Convenience Package and puts on a sportier appearance with a unique front and rear fascia, grille, rear spoiler, and 19-inch wheels.
Darkened headlight bezels match the black mirrors, window trim, roof trim, and exterior accents. For a lower look, the door sills are painted body color. Inside the N Line features red accents, sport seats, a black headliner, and N Line logo steering wheel and shift knob.
The Limited trim builds off of the SEL with the Convenience and Premium packages and further adds a panoramic sunroof, chrome exterior accents, silver-painted front and rear faux skid plates, gloss black B and C Pillars, projection LED headlights, an 8-way power driver’s seat with position memory, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and remote smart parking - a term that is now tough to say without a Boston accent.

The SEL trim with the optional Convenience Package adds some styling and high-tech flair that seems perfectly aligned with the modern design of the all-new Tucson.
