What's New
The 2022 Kia Niro EV gains additional infotainment tech for the base trim while all trims are dressed with the brand’s latest logo. As before, this 100% electric SUV is available alongside the gas-electric hybrid and Niro Plug-In Hybrid. Unlike the standard Niro, the EV is actively sold in only select states, namely: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Texas.
Choosing Your Kia Niro EV
The Niro EV is available in two trims; EX and EX Premium. Prices range from $41,165 to $45,825 before incentives like the Federal EV Tax Credit and state plug-in rebates like the California Clean Vehicle Rebate.
Engine Choices
The Niro EV is equipped with a 64-kWh battery pack and achieves an EPA-estimated range of 239 miles which are both slightly less than what the new Chevrolet Bolt EUV offers. The powertrain still packs a punch with 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque sent to the front wheels.
Hooked up to a DC Fast Charging station, the Niro EV can recharge 80% of its capacity in about an hour while at a more typical 6.6 kW charging station, the Kia requires about nine and a half hours to reach 80%.
The Niro EV achieves an EPA-estimated 112 MPGe which lands its driving efficiency precisely in between that of the Nissan Leaf and the Bolt EUV.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
Kia’s five-passenger EV crossover stretches to 172.2 inches in length and rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase. Those dimensions help to deliver 18.5 cubic feet of storage space behind the second-row seats, 53 cubic feet with the seats folded, and 36 inches of rear legroom. The Niro’s platform, however, is not dedicated to the EV powertrain, as there are the Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid models, and thus lacks the space efficiency that other EV-only models on the market can provide.
Safety Features
The Niro EV is fully loaded with active safety technology. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic warning, lane keep assist, high beam assist, and Kia’s semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist. The EX Premium further includes rear parking sensors.
Connectivity
The EX trim now matches the EX Premium’s level of connectivity with a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, HD Radio, Bluetooth, and USB inputs. It also integrates navigation and a Harman Kardon eight-speaker premium sound system with Clari-Fi technology. A wireless phone charger is also included on both trim levels.
Niro EV EX - MSRP From $41,165
The EX trim includes plenty of features for being a "base" trim and to highlight its EV status, the Niro receives a body-color grille that also houses the charge port, blue exterior accents, and 17-inch aerodynamically shaped wheels. The EX trim also includes projector beam headlights, roof rails, heated power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals, remote engine start, and proximity entry. Inside, the Niro is equipped with cloth and synthetic seating surfaces, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a tilt and telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, a seven-inch digital driver information display, heated front seats, automatic climate control with center console-mounted rear vents, and a rotary shift dial.
A Cold Weather Package is available for $1,100 and includes a heated steering wheel, a heat pump that captures waste heat from a number of electrical components and cycles it into the cabin, and a battery heater that helps to improve charging performance and range in the winter.
Niro EV EX Premium - MSRP From $45,825
The EX Premium adds rear LED combination lights, a sunroof, synthetic leather seats with blue accent stitching, ventilated seats, and interior ambient lighting.
The Cold Weather Package is also available for the same price.
Compare Niro EV Trims Side-By-Side
The EX trim is very well equipped and is the ideal trim while the Cold Weather Package is a worthy consideration for those of you in the snow belt regions.
