The Niro Plug-In Hybrid is fitted with a naturally-aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that is aided by a motor to generate a combined 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet. Power is routed through a six-speed dual-clutch automated transmission to the front wheels.
The 8.9 kWh battery pack enables an EPA-estimated 26-mile EV range and 46 mpg combined when acting solely as a hybrid. As a combined unit, the Niro Plug-In Hybrid achieves 105 mpge and has a range of 560 miles.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid is 171.5 inches long and seats five. Rear seat passengers welcome the crossover shape as it provides 39.1 inches of headroom and its 106.3-inch long wheelbase helps to offer 37.4 inches of legroom. The cargo room is 19.4 cubic feet and expands to 54.5 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded.
Safety Features
The Niro Plug-In Hybrid includes the most critical active safety features as standard equipment such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-keep assist with lane centering. The mid-level EX trim includes active cruise control, rear-seat occupant reminder, and an expanded automatic emergency braking system that incorporates bicycle detection. The EX Premium trim adds Kia’s semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist equipment.
The 2022 Niro Plug-In Hybrid earns Good scores for crashworthiness from IIHS and has not been evaluated by NHTSA. The Niro Hybrid, however, earned just four out of five stars.
Connectivity
The Niro Plug-In Hybrid is standard with an eight-inch touchscreen display that integrates Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, and Bluetooth compatibility. Charging options are limited to a 12-volt outlet and a USB charge port upfront, while a wireless charging pad is added on the EX and EX Premium trims. A 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen is featured on the EX Premium trim and is joined by a Harman Kardon eight-speaker premium sound system.

The LXS features a gloss black grille with chrome lower trim, projector-beam headlights with high beam assist, body-color door handles, 16-inch wheels, and proximity entry. Inside, cloth seats with four-way manually adjustability for the driver, a tilt and telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 4.2-inch digital driver information display, a one-touch up driver’s window control, and dual-zone climate control round out the notable features.
Niro Plug-In Hybrid EX – MSRP From $34,565
The EX adds fog lights, power-folding heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED rear combination lights, cloth and leather seating with heating for the front seats and 10-way power-adjustability for the driver, ambient lighting, a seven-inch digital driver information display, rear HVAC vents in the rear of the center console, and a cargo area cover.
Niro Plug-In Hybrid EX Premium – MSRP From $37,665
The EX Premium builds on the EX trim and adds a sunroof, synthetic leather seats with ventilation and driver’s seat position memory, a heated steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and LED interior lighting.
There are no optional packages available.
