Introduction

What's New

The main changes for 2022 center on the Land Rover Range Rover Sport's model lineup, with seven trims available but only with specific engines. Your choice of powerplant will determine your Sport’s specs, though second-row USB-C ports are now standard across the range. Prices for the luxury SUV have also risen significantly since the summer.

Choosing Your Land Rover Range Rover Sport

The most affordable route to Range Rover Sport ownership is an SE model, costing $72,850 (all prices including destination). Alternatively, you could splash out $133,950 on the high-performance SVR Carbon Edition, or save nearly $15,000 by choosing the standard SVR with the same five-liter supercharged V8.

The 395 HP HST model costs $87,050, while there’s an $11,000 difference between the two 518 HP supercharged V8 models, with HSE Dynamic trim the cheaper option at $90,650.

Engine Choices

The Range Rover Sport range features two engines, each available in different states of tune. The three-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid gas engine generates 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, boosted to 395 HP and 406 lb-ft in HST models. This is supplied to all four wheels through the same eight-speed automatic transmission fitted to every Sport, returning an EPA-estimated 19 miles per gallon city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 combined.

The more powerful five-liter supercharged V8 gas engine kicks out 518 HP and 461 lb-ft of torque in HSE Dynamic and Autobiography models, rising to 575 HP and 516 lb-ft in SVR guise. Fuel economy drops to 17/22/19 MPG in the former, and 15/20/16 MPG in the latter.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity for the five-seater Range Rover Sport stands at 31.7 cu ft with the rear seats in place, and 63.7 cu ft once they’re dropped. It’s possible to add a third-row seating arrangement in the boot, dropping cargo space to 10.8 cu ft.

Safety Features

As well as the reassurance of Land Rover’s legendary Terrain Response all-wheel-drive system, every Range Rover Sport features brake force distribution with cornering braking control and emergency brake assist, plus hill launch assist and hill descent control.

There’s air suspension and a high-range transfer box, roll stability control, and speed-limited cruise control incorporating lane keep assist. However, you’ll have to raid the options list to add features like adaptive cruise, blind-spot assist, or a 360-degree surround camera. LED exterior lighting and parking sensors at both ends of the car come as standard, but auto high beam is missing on base SE models.

Connectivity

There’s little to separate the cheapest and most expensive Range Rover Sport models in terms of their connectivity and infotainment. They all receive a pair of touchscreens including an interactive driver display, smartphone compatibility, navigation and WiFi hotspot, plus satellite radio and charging ports. A 19-speaker Meridian sound system is standard on every model bar SE.

Ranger Rover Sport SE – MSRP From $72,850

The only Sport to ride on 19-inch wheels, SE is hardly a poor relation. Its standard specs include rain-sensing wipers and automatic lights, auto-dimming, and power-folding heated door mirrors with memory and approach lighting. There’s 14-way memory for the grained leather seats, while two-zone climate cools a cabin offering keyless access and push-button start, a powered tailgate, and navigation.

Given this car’s size, the $750 Park Pack is a worthy upgrade, with a 360-degree parking aid and traffic/exit monitors. These are also included in the $4,915 Driver Assist Pack, alongside traffic sign recognition with adaptive speed limiting, adaptive cruise control with steering assistance, a surround-view camera, driver condition monitoring, and high-speed emergency braking.

Range Rover Sport HSE Silver Edition – MSRP From $81,450

With the same mechanical underpinnings, HSE Silver Edition’s upgrades are entirely specification-based. It sits on larger 21-inch gloss black wheels, with front fog lights also notable externally.

The stereo is upgraded to a 19-speaker 825-watt Meridian surround sound system, while the front seats gain 16-way adjustment, cooling and heating, with heating elements fitted to the rear seats. Windsor leather fills the cabin below a sliding panoramic roof, and the Park Pack combines clear exit and rear traffic monitors with a 360-degree parking aid.

With the Park Pack fitted as standard, the Driver Assist pack falls to $4,000. As with SE, you could also spend $1,800 on an Off-Road Pack, combining a two-speed transfer box and adaptive dynamics with all-terrain progress control.

Range Rover Sport HST – MSRP From $87,050

With most of the price increase explained by its higher-tuned engine, trim differences on HST are modest. There’s aluminum trim throughout the cabin including on the gearshift paddles and a suede-cloth steering wheel, while you might also notice red brake calipers through the nine-spoke alloy wheels. However, there’s only three-zone climate (as opposed to HSE’s four-zone), and this model lacks the cheaper vehicle’s cabin air ionization.

The Driver Assist package remains $4,000, while the Climate Comfort pack bundles four-zone climate and a heated steering wheel with a center console fridge for $1,320.

Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic – MSRP From $90,650

There are some hidden upgrades on HSE Dynamic compared to Silver, including a two-speed transfer box, adaptive vehicle dynamics, and all-terrain progress control, not to mention that snarling supercharged V8. However, it loses cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel, the cooled center console refrigerator, and four-zone climate in favor of a basic two-zone system.

Options are the same as on HST and higher models.

Range Rover Sport Autobiography – MSRP From $101,850

While HST and HSE drop specs to boost performance, Autobiography makes no such compromises. Its semi-aniline leather seats include 22-way adjustment and cooling in the front, while the heated leather steering wheel has silver gear shift paddles.

The doors close themselves softly, configurable ambient cabin lighting makes a welcome return, and extra safety features include blind-spot monitors and driver condition monitors plus traffic sign recognition.

Range Rover Sport SVR – MSRP From $119,150

You won’t find significantly more luxury in SVR models than lesser trims, but you will find the most powerful version of Land Rover’s five-liter supercharged V8. SVR makes a song and dance about this, with red brake calipers behind satin polished alloy wheels, an SVR-branded heated leather steering wheel and performance seats, four-corner electronic air suspension, and a black contrast sliding panoramic roof.

Range Rover Sport SVR Carbon Edition – MSRP From $133,950

Once again, there are mainly aesthetic differences between Carbon and standard SVR trim. Your extra money buys you a carbon fiber exterior pack and hood with an SVR-branded carbon-fiber engine cover and matching interior trim.

Other visual flourishes include 22-inch split-spoke gloss black alloy wheels and illuminated aluminum treadplates with SVR Carbon Edition branding.

CarsDirect Tip

Unusually, specification levels actually drop as you move up the Sport range until you reach Autobiography trim. We reckon HSE Silver Edition is luxurious and safe enough, with many of the upgrades on more expensive models purely aesthetic or performance-related.
