Sitting on a more rigid (yet lighter) chassis, the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport introduces a plug-in hybrid version for the first time. The design is more streamlined with flush-fitting door handles and narrow daytime running lights, while the latest-generation Pivi Pro infotainment system is introduced alongside greater safety features. Sadly, the high-performance five-liter supercharged engine has been dropped.

There are four Range Rover Sport trims available, with SE costing $84,350 (all prices include destination). A more powerful engine and higher specifications sees Dynamic SE costing $91,350, while the same is true of the $105,550 Autobiography model. The range concludes with the confusingly named First Edition, costing $122,850 and uniquely powered by a 4.4-liter engine.

Every Range Rover Sport bar the First Edition is powered by a three-liter supercharged gas engine, in different states of tune. The P360 generates 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, the P400 ups these figures to 395 and 406 respectively, and the P440e plug-in hybrid outputs 434 hp and 457 lb-ft. Each configuration sends power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The First Edition model is unique in offering a 4.4-liter V8 sourced from BMW, producing 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. Fuel economy figures have yet to be confirmed for this or the plug-in hybrid, though the 2022 MY P360 and P400 figures reported combined returns of 21 mpg.

Cargo capacity for the five-seater Range Rover Sport stands at 31.9 cu ft with the rear seats in place, and 118 cu ft once they’re dropped.

As well as being more sure-footed than a mountain goat, the Range Rover Sport comes with a comprehensive array of driver assistance and safety features. Every model has a 3D surround camera system, lane-keeping assistance with blind-spot warnings, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control with steering assist.

There’s also a driver condition response system. First Edition models are unique in receiving an electronic active diff and all-wheel steering, but every Sport receives Hill Descent and Gradient Acceleration/Release Control, cornering brake control, adaptive dynamics, and a high-range transfer box.

It’s a given that premium SUVs now offer satellite and HD radio, wireless smartphone mirroring, and online services. Of greater relevance is the latest generation of Land Rover’s Pivi Pro system, with twin Snapdragon processors underpinning self-learning algorithms and navigation with automatic updates.

This is controlled through a 13.1-inch touchscreen, while other goodies include wireless device charging with signal boosting. Autobiography models are the first to receive a head-up display and a 3D Meridian sound system, with these features recurring in First Edition trim.

Every Range Rover Sport is lavishly equipped, even SE models. Take the outside mirrors – as well as being heated and electrically adjustable with power folding, they have memory settings, approach lighting, and auto-dimming on the driver’s side. Other examples of over-engineering include automatic headlights with power-wash and self-leveling, and rain-sensing wipers with a dedicated winter park position. Open the doors, and aluminum treadplates precede a keyless cabin with two-zone climate, a sliding panoramic roof, and perforated Windsor leather across the 20-way heated memory front seats and power reclining rear seats.

For $1,785, the Technology Pack adds a head-up display and domestic plug sockets to an interior rearview mirror. The $640 Cold Climate Pack places heating elements in the windshield, washer jets, and steering wheel, while the Hot Climate Pack costs $1,465 but adds four-zone climate with air purification alongside a refrigerator and twin-blade sun-visors.

Most of that $7,000 price premium over SE trim is explained by a more powerful engine. However, Dynamic SE models also include subtle aesthetic touches like metal pedals, black brake calipers, ebony headlining, and a moonlight bezel on the leather steering wheel.

Packs are the same as on SE.

Quad tailpipes hint at the greater performance delivered by Autobiography models, with illuminated metal treadplates and seat belt buckles. More prominent upgrades include a head-up display and a 3D Meridian surround sound system, soft closing doors, and a twin-speed transfer box. Semi-aniline leather seats are perforated with 22-way adjustment in the front, plus heating and ventilation in both the front and rear, while the cabin receives four-way climate control.

The Cold Climate pack remains available, while a front center console fridge can be added as a standalone extra for $350.

As the last word in luxury, First Edition models ride on 23-inch wheels with pixel-style LED headlights, and they’re the only Sport model supplied as standard with metallic paint. Other goodies include adaptive off-road cruise control, all-wheel steering, and dynamically responsive air suspension.
