What's New
Mazda has made a few changes to the 2023 Mazda3’s powertrain lineup for the new model year. Last year’s base 2.0-liter four-cylinder has been dropped for 2023. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine takes over as the base motor and gets a 5-horsepower bump to 191 hp. The 2.5-liter engine also gains cylinder deactivation to be more efficient.
Other noteworthy changes include standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (finally) and available all-wheel drive with the Carbon Edition trim.
Choosing Your Mazda Mazda3
Mazda offers the compact Mazda3 in sedan and hatchback body styles. The sedan is available in six trims, while the hatchback is offered in seven. Both body styles are available in 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus trims. The hatchback has an extra 2.5 Turbo trim.
Pricing for the Mazda3 ranges from $23,615 to $35,065 (with destination) for the sedan. Most hatchback trims are $1,000 more than their sedan counterpart.
AWD is standard on the 2.5 S Premium and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus sedans and available on the 2.5 S Carbon Edition and 2.5 S Premium hatchbacks for $1,400, but standard on the 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus hatchbacks.
Engine Choices
The Mazda3’s engine lineup has been trimmed to two options for 2023. Both are 2.5-liter engines, but one has a turbocharger and a lot more power. At the time of writing, the EPA hasn’t released its official fuel economy figures for the sedan body style yet.
The turbocharged engine delivers serious performance, but it’s a hefty upgrade over the base engine. Plus, those looking for good fuel economy will prefer the updated 2.5-liter engine, which is expected to be more efficient than the turbo engine.
Engine Type | Horsepower | Torque | Fuel Economy (City/Highway/Combined) |
2.5 | 191 hp | 186 lb-ft | 27/35/30 (hatch FWD) 26/36/30 (hatch FWD manual) 26/33/29 (hatch AWD) |
2.5 turbo | 250 hp | 320 lb-ft | 23/31/26 (hatch AWD) |
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
All Mazda3s have seating for up to five people. The sedan offers up to 13.2 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, while the hatchback offers up to 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place.
Safety Features
Every Mazda3 comes with a driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard starting with the Select trim. Traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a surround-view parking camera are standard on the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus trim.
Connectivity
The Mazda3 comes with an 8.8-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, eight audio speakers, an HD Radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and voice command as standard. Available features include a 12-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, and satellite radio.
2023 Mazda Mazda3 2.5 S – MSRP From $23,615
Standard features on the base Mazda3 include automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, push-button start, cloth upholstery, and a 7-inch display in the instrument cluster.
2023 Mazda Mazda3 2.5 S Select – MSRP From $25,015
Moving up to the 2.5 S Select trim brings some extra exterior colors, 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, advanced keyless entry, push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and leatherette upholstery.
2023 Mazda Mazda 3 2.5 S Preferred – MSRP From $26,615
The Preferred trim feels like the sweet spot in the lineup with heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a moonroof, and an overhead console with a sunglasses holder.
2023 Mazda Mazda3 2.5 S Carbon Edition – MSRP From $28,265
The Carbon Edition trim stands out thanks to black 18-inch wheels, Polymetal Gray Metallic paint, a Bose audio system, and red leather upholstery.
2023 Mazda Mazda3 2.5 S Premium – MSRP From $30,465
Premium trims stand out with signature LED headlights and heated black exterior mirrors. On the inside, the trim comes with leather upholstery, sport front seats, paddle shifters, satellite radio, and a head-up display.
2023 Mazda Mazda3 2.5 Turbo – MSRP From $33,515
The 2.5 Turbo is a hatchback exclusive that adds the more powerful turbo engine, standard AWD, and a heated steering wheel.
2023 Mazda Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus – MSRP From $35,065
The range-topping Premium Plus feels like an upscale compact car by adding an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal garage door opener.
Compare Mazda3 Trims Side-By-Side
As much as we love the turbocharged engine with the 2023 Mazda3, the now standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes with more power and is more efficient than before. We consider that a major win, which has us leaning toward the Preferred trim. While the hatchback has a prettier design and a larger cargo area, it has massive blind spots that can make it hard to drive, so we recommend sticking with the sedan. For those in need of AWD, the S Premium is the best choice.
