Highlights:

  • 2020 4Runner is here
  • Rebate: Up to $1,500 off
  • Finance: No APR deals
  • Lease: $379/mo. for 36 mo. (NorCal)

90-day first payment deferral:

The 2020 4Runner is in showrooms now. Though technically a carryover, the 2020 4Runner gets a revamped TRD Pro model and Android Auto. This rugged SUV continues with the same unattractive offers this month.

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner has mostly the same offers as last month, including a 90-day payment deferral on all 4Runner models financed or leased through Toyota Financial in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Toyota's offers vary by region and will expire June 1, 2020. Unless otherwise noted, all examples listed here are for Southern California. We may see a few new offers arrive for Memorial Day, so stay tuned for updates.

Cash incentives remain:

The Keep It Wild Discount continues and shows no signs of slowing. Amounts vary: SR5, TRD Off-Road, and Trail models get $500 off; Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium models get $750 off; and the 4Runner Limited gets $1,000 off.

On top of these discounts, Toyota offers $500 in bonus cash on the 2020 4Runner, bringing the potential combined discount to $1,500.

No APR offers:

There are no financing incentives on the 2020 4Runner other than the 90-day deferred first payment through Toyota Motor Finance.

New lease offer:

In Northern California, shoppers can get a new 36-month promotional lease on the 2020 4Runner SR5. This deal runs $379 per month with $3,599 due at signing. With an effective monthly cost of $479, this is a good value relative to its MSRP.

This and all leases through Toyota Motor Finance qualify for the 90-day first payment deferral.

Introduction

What's New

It hasn't been all-new since 2009, but the 2020 Toyota 4Runner gets a minor refresh with plenty of welcome upgrades. Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P), the automaker's suite of active safety features, is now standard. This means every trim gets automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and more.

An 8-inch touchscreen is standard throughout the lineup, replacing last year’s 6.1-inch unit. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa are all included. A redesigned instrument cluster now features a 4.2-inch display for crucial information. The last tech change is the addition of two USB ports in the back.

SR5 Premium and TRD variants get remote keyless entry and push-button start as standard. The range-topping TRD Pro gets a performance exhaust system and is now available in the exclusive shade of Army Green.

A new Venture Special Edition trim also joins the 4Runner lineup. The special edition SUV gets a Yakima MegaWarrior roof rack, 17-inch TRD wheels, black exterior accents, and numerous TRD logos on the outside.

Choosing Your Toyota 4Runner

Toyota offers the 4Runner in eight different trims: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Venture Special Edition, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and TRD Pro. Pricing starts at $37,140 including destination for the base SR5 and rises to $50,885 for the TRD Pro.

Engine Choices

The 4Runner is only available with one engine: a 4.0-liter V6. Power for the engine is rated at 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available, but there are two different four-wheel-drive systems on offer. There's a part-time 4WD system with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and a full-time 4WD system with A-TRAC and a Torsen limited-slip differential.

The SR5 and SR5 Premium come standard with RWD, but the part-time 4WD system is available for $1,875. The Limited and Nightshade Special Edition get standard RWD, while the full-time 4WD system is available for $1,610 (Limited) or $2,035 (Nightshade). The three TRD trims and the Venture Special Edition are only available with the part-time 4WD system.

Regardless of whether you choose rear- or four-wheel drive, the 4Runner earns an EPA-estimated 16 miles per gallon city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 combined. Towing capacity for the 4Runner is rated at up to 5,000 pounds.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Toyota 4Runner is available in both five- and seven-passenger layouts. The TRD and Venture Special Edition are only available with seating for five, but you can choose to add the third row on all other trims for $305, $335, or $365, depending on the trim.

Without the third row, the 4Runner offers a comfortable amount of head room and leg room in both rows – the second row reclines for extra space, too. The available third row is best left for children.

Cargo space in the 4Runner measures in at 46.3 cubic feet of space behind the second row. If you opt for the optional third row, you get a scant 9 cubic feet of cargo space with all three rows in place. In total, there’s 88.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety Features

With TSS-P now coming as standard, the 4Runner comes with a good list of safety features. Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. Front and rear parking sensors are standard on the Limited and Nightshade Edition.

The 4Runner has a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

Connectivity

Every 4Runner comes with an 8-inch touchscreen that includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Three USB ports, Bluetooth, satellite radio, wi-fi hot spot capabilitiy, and five 12-volt power outlets are also standard. Navigation is standard on all but the SR5 and TRD-Off Road, but it's available as an option on those trims.

SR5 - From $37,140

Standard features on the base 4Runner SR5 trim include LED taillights, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors, roof rails, 17-inch wheels, and multiple skid plates. On the inside, the trim comes with cloth upholstery, an eight-way power driver seat, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, remote keyless entry, and a power rear liftgate window.

Navigation and HD radio are available together for $1,085.

SR5 Premium - From $40,335

The SR5 Premium comes with navigation, SofTex-trimmed seats, heated front seats, push-button start, a universal garage door opener, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror as standard. The side mirrors also get turn signal indicators. A moonroof is a standalone option for $630.

TRD Off-Road - From $40,860

The 4Runner TRD Off-Road builds on the SR5 and adds unique 17-inch wheels, a multi-terrain select driving system, a locking rear differential, and TRD badging inside and out.

The trim is available with Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which can automatically disconnect the SUV’s sway bars for more articulation, for $1,250. Navigation is still available for $1,085.

TRD Off-Road Premium - From $43,590

The TRD Off-Road Premium combines the standard features from the TRD Off-Road trim and the SR5 Premium. It also brings TRD badgiing on the front headrests.

The KDSS costs $1,000 on the trim, or you can bundle it with a moonroof for $1,630. The moonroof is still available on its own for $630.

Venture Special Edition - From $45,405

The 4Runner Venture Special Edition adds a Yakima MegaWarrior cargo basket, black door handles, a black rear spoiler, 17-inch dark grey metallic alloy wheels, and all-weather floor mats.

Adding KDSS is an extra $1,750 on this trim, but the moonroof still only costs $630.

Limited - From $46,005

The Limited trim is the 4Runner’s most luxurious. The list of standard equipment grows to include the moonroof, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a 15-speaker JBL audio system. It's also enhanced with automatic headlights, chrome door handles, 20-inch wheels, and a suspension enhanced by an X-REAS shock system.

Automatic running boards cost $500.

Nightshade Special Edition - From $47,745

The 4Runner Nightshade Special Edition builds off of the Limited’s list of standard equipment, but adds a host of black exterior touches. Black door handles, a black chrome exhaust outlet, black 20-inch wheels, and a black chrome grille are all included.

TRD Pro - From $50,885

The TRD Pro sits at the top of the 4Runner lineup. The exterior features a "TOYOTA" front grille, a roof basket, LED fog lights, 17-inch matte black TRD wheels, black "TRD PRO" badging, and a TRD-stamped aluminum front skid plate. Performance is enhanced by TRD Fox shocks, TRD-tuned front springs, and all-terrain tires.

Non-automatic running boards cost $345.

CarsDirect Tip

Unless trekking through the wilderness is your thing – if it is, only the TRD Off-Road Premium or TRD Pro will do – stick with the 2020 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium. The 4Runner is an old-school SUV, so the expensive Limited trim isn’t all that luxurious. And paying extra for one of the Special Editions isn’t something we recommend, as they don’t bring a lot of extra features.
