What's New for 2014

The RAV4 EV carries into 2014 unchanged. It’s currently a generation behind the gasoline model, which moved to a new platform last year.

Choosing Your Toyota RAV4 EV

Two factors determine who may buy a RAV4 EV. The first is that it's sold and serviced only by select dealerships in California. (There’s nothing to stop you from taking one out of state, but you’ll be on your own when it comes to maintenance.) The second is a rather breathtaking $50,000 price tag.

The EPA estimates that the RAV4 EV can travel 103 miles on a single charge. That’s the longest range of any electric vehicle you can buy with the exception of even pricier Telsa offerings. The 115-kW electric motor produces the equivalent of 154 horsepower and 218 pound-feet of torque in Normal driving mode. Hit the Sport button and torque increases to 273 pound-feet. So engaged, the RAV4 EV goes from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, snappy performance for any small crossover. It’s significantly faster than the gas model, which is no longer available with a V6. A single-speed transmission delivers power to the front wheels.

Aside from the color, Toyota has done all the configuring for you. The RAV4 EV carries a high level of standard equipment, including navigation, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, satellite radio, LED accent lighting and exclusive cloth upholstery. To aid in efficiency, the exterior features an elongated rear spoiler, a special grille design and aerodynamic mirror housings. You also get EV-specific instrumentation and smartphone apps. There are no factory options.
