2023 VW Taos is here
The Taos is Volkswagen's cheapest SUV; however, the model's starting price is higher than the competitors. It's around $2,200 cheaper than a Tiguan, which isn't all that much of a difference and could make upgrading a better deal depending on Tiguan discounts.
2022s have sold out, but 2023s are available. Given the fact that it's still considered an all-new model and inventories across the board are extremely low, expect prices to be at MSRP in the near term, if not longer.
Current offers vary by location and are good through May 1, 2023. Our examples are based on what's available in Los Angeles.

What's New
For the 2023 model year, Volkswagen has updated the Taos’ list of standard safety features. The SE trim now comes with VW’s IQ.DRIVE suite of advanced safety features. The suite makes the Taos more competitive in the subcompact segment. The base S trim adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and pedestrian detection as standard.
Beyond the addition of IQ.DRIVE, the 2023 Taos arrives as a carryover model with few changes.
Choosing Your Volkswagen Taos
Volkswagen offers the Taos in three trims: S, SE, and SEL. Pricing ranges from $30,615 to $35,830 (with destination).
Engine Choices
The Taos is only available with one engine. Every model comes with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and routes power to the front wheels. Models with all-wheel drive get a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
All-wheel drive is available on the base S for $2,340 and $1,450 for the SE. Taos models with FWD can get up to 31 mpg combined, while AWD models are rated at up to 28 mpg combined.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The subcompact Taos offers seating for up to five people and is one of the roomier options in the class. The Taos also has a large cargo area with 28 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 66 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Safety Features
The base S trim now comes with a decent list of standard safety features. The trim comes with a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection.
The IQ.DRIVE suite costs $995 and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam assist, and automatic emergency steering. The IQ.DRIVE suite is standard on the SE and SEL trims.
Connectivity
Every Taos comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, four audio speakers, and two USB ports. Moving up to the SE adds an 8-inch touchscreen, a rear USB port, six audio speakers, a wireless charging pad, and satellite radio. The SEL comes with a Beats audio system with eight speakers, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with VW’s Digital Cockpit Pro system, and navigation.
2023 Volkswagen Taos S – MSRP From $30,615
The base S trim comes standard with LED exterior lighting, roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, manual climate control, manually adjustable front seats, and a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel.
2023 Volkswagen Taos SE – MSRP From $35,830
The SE trim includes 18-inch wheels, heated washer nozzles, heated exterior mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, CloudTex upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated front seats.
A panoramic sunroof costs $1,200, while 18-inch black wheels are $395.
2023 Volkswagen Taos SEL – MSRP From $35,830
The range-topping SEL comes with adaptive headlights, a sunroof, ambient interior lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and parking sensors.
Compare Taos Trims Side-By-Side
With Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE now coming as standard equipment on the SE, that’s the trim we recommend. Beyond safety features, it comes well-equipped with an attractive list of convenience and tech features at a reasonable price.
