Extended Car Warranty Insurance Protection Based on Mileage

January 27, 2012

When purchasing a new or used vehicle, there are usually many extended car warranty insurance options available to you. Some warranties are offered directly from the car manufacturer while others may be offered by warranty specialty companies or even car insurance companies. Here are of the different types of warranties available based on the mileage of a vehicle.

New Car Warranties

If you purchase a brand new vehicle, the manufacturer of the car or truck will normally provide bumper to bumper coverage on it for a specified period of time. In most cases, car manufacturers warranty a new vehicle for a period of about three years or 36,000 miles. Some offer much longer warranties, and a few offer warranties up to 10 years or 100,000 miles on most of the vehicle's major components and parts.

Although many new car dealerships will offer you an extended warranty at the time of sale, you might want to consider declining a warranty offer as it may not be required in the first few years of ownership. You always have the option of purchasing a warranty yourself just before or after the car manufacturer's new car warranty expires.

Certified Used Cars

Many car manufacturers offer some sort of certified used vehicle program. Certified used cars are usually those less than two or three years of age that have a relatively low number of miles on them. The car manufacturer will have the vehicle inspected and certified by factory trained mechanics and technicians.

For vehicles that meet the requirements of the certification program, the manufacturer will usually offer a limited warranty on them. These types of warranties may be similar to a new car warranty, but don't extend beyond one or two years or 12,000 to 24,000 miles.

Regular Used Car Warranty Coverage

Even if a vehicle is not qualified for a certified used car warranty, there are still plenty of auto coverage options available. There are car warranty specialty companies and even car insurance companies that provide extended warranties for used vehicles.

Extended car warranties are available for most makes and model models of vehicles that have less than 75,000 miles on the odometer. You should remember that the older the vehicle is, and the higher the number of miles on the odometer, the more expensive an extended car warranty will be. For vehicles that are more than four or five years old, it may be difficult to get complete extended warranty protection.

As a car becomes older, the vehicle is much more susceptible to mechanical breakdown. As a result, many car warranty companies or insurance companies limit their exposure to costly part replacements or repairs by limiting the scope of coverage for older vehicles. If the vehicle is more than 10 years old or has more than 100,000 miles on the odometer, you will find it difficult to find warranty coverage at all.

In the event you are able to secure an extended warranty for an older vehicle, you will find that coverage is very limited and it will probably be very expensive. Therefore, if you own a vehicle with that is particularly old, or has a high number of miles, you might find that it is cheaper to simply pay for repairs as they are needed out-of-pocket.
