Can I be Added to My Parent's Car Insurance Policy if the Car is in My Name?

January 27, 2012

It depends on your parents car insurance policy. In most cases, insurance companies prefer that the car being insured is owned by the policyholder. There are exceptions to this rule though so check with your parents insurance company regarding their guidelines and policies. There are ways around this. Selling the vehicle to your parents for a nominal sum, or having their names put on the title will allow you to add it to their insurance policy. Another consideration is that if you have a loan on the vehicle, often the financing company will not accept your parents policy as proof of insurance.
