What to Do with an Old Car Battery

January 27, 2012

If you have an old car battery, you have a couple of avenues of how to proceed with it. Chances are, your old car battery will fail sometime soon. This will cause you to have to get a new car battery, which can be costly. So that begs the question, what do you do with your old car battery? There are a couple of things you can do.

Sell It

Even an old car battery can have some value. They may not be worth much, but it is better than nothing. You can take your battery to an auto shop, or to the place where you plan on getting the new battery. They will either buy the old battery from you, or even award you store credit to be used towards the purchase of a new battery. They do this because they will in turn refurbish your old battery and then sell those in their store as well.

Recycle Car Batteries

Another option for car battery removal is recycling. This is the proper way to dispose of a car battery if you don't plan on selling it. You can't just throw away a car battery. It is considered a hazardous material and should be recycled by those with the right equipment. Commonly these would be metal recyclers. They may even offer you a couple bucks for the battery as well. There may also be a special place in your town where they take hazardous materials, so contact your local government to find out the proper location.
