Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV: Preview, Pricing, Release Date

Model Preview

The Chevrolet Bolt EV arrived in 2017, giving the American automaker a legitimate competitor in the EV space. The 2022 Chevy Bolt EV will come with an all-new look and tech. A more crossover-like platform-mate, the Bolt EUV, will accompany this redesigned EV hatchback.

Stylistically, the 2022 Bolt EV and EUV will share a base design that’ll include a more rounded front end with slim LED headlights and a closed grille. The Bolt EV will set itself apart with black accents that flow from the front fenders through the fog light housings. Around back, the Bolt EV’s distinguishing design features will include thicker taillights and a lower bumper with less cladding. Down the sides, the Bolt EV sets itself apart with less body cladding than its EUV sibling. Chevy also claims the Bolt EV will include 100% unique sheet metal, giving the EUV a more muscular look. The Bolt EV will also be 6.3 inches shorter, 0.2 inches narrower, and 0.2 inches lower than the EUV.

Inside, the Bolt EV will get a fully redesigned cabin that’ll boast a more mainstream look than the current model. This interior will include a stylish flat-bottom steering wheel, a clean dash with angular air vents, a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 8-inch digital gauge cluster, a push-button gear shifter, and more. With the Bolt EV and EUV sharing most of this redesigned cabin, the differences are hard to spot, but the main distinction is the EV’s narrower lower steering wheel spoke.

The 2022 Bolt EV will also have a tighter rear seat with just 36 inches of leg room – 3.1 inches less than the EUV. In all other measurements, the Bolt EV is a bit roomier than the EUV, including its 16.3 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats and 56.9 cubes of max cargo room, which are 0.3 and 0.1 cubes larger than the Bolt EUV, respectively.

Standard tech features in the 2022 Bolt EV will include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optionally, buyers can add a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and a wireless charging pad, which is standard in the EUV.

Chevy Bolt EV

Under its hood, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EV and EUV will share a powertrain: a single electric motor with 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. A 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery will deliver up to a GM-estimated 259 miles on a charge – 9 miles more than the Bolt EUV. The 2022 Bolt EV will deliver an estimated 100 miles of range with just 30 minutes on a DC fast charger – 5 more miles than the EUV.

Official IIHS testing will come later, but the 2022 Bolt EV will come standard with a wide range of safety tech. This laundry list of features will include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, following distance indicator, automatic high-beam headlights, and front pedestrian braking. Optionally, buyers will be able to add rear cross-traffic alert, 360-degree HD camera, adaptive cruise control, and even GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance.

Pricing & Release Date

The 2022 Chevy Bolt EV will be available in the summer of 2021.

The 2022 Bolt EV’s pricing will start from $31,995 (destination fees included), which is $5,500 less than the 2021 Bolt EV.

Competitors for the Bolt EV include the Nissan LEAF, Tesla Model 3, and Hyundai Kona Electric.
