Until recent years, the coupe didn't play a significant role in compact lineups of premium German automakers. But American buyers now have their pick of elegantly styled two-door models like the Mercedes-Benz C250 and Audi A5.

But which offers the best combination of style and performance?

What the Mercedes-Benz C250 Gets Right

The C250 mates a seven-speed automatic transmission to a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. This combination delivers a reasonable 201 horsepower to the rear wheels. Drivers can expect combined fuel efficiency of up to 31 mpg highway. The coupe is notable for precise handling and steering remains; Perhaps the most impressive of all its attributes is a comfortable ride and excellent noise isolation.

Standard features include 17-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, power front seats, a 5.8-inch dashboard display, HD radio, steering-wheel audio controls, USB/iPod compatibility, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming.

What the Audi A5 Gets Right

The A5's 220-horsepower 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is paired with an six-speed manual transmission as standard, but an eight-speed auto is available as an option. Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system is standard, and the A5's combined EPA rating is up to 32 mpg highway.

Leading the A5's interior updates is a mobile WiFi system that turns the A5 into a hotspot and improves web functionality for navigation, online music streaming, real-time traffic reporting, display of plane and train schedules and many other online functions.

What Matters Most to Buyers?

We admire the A5 for its state-of-the-art computer-managed engine and transmission design, and drivers who live with inclement weather will certainly appreciate its standard all-wheel drive. Don't expect adults to ride in the back seat, however -- legroom and headroom are in short supply.

Our Verdict: Mercedes-Benz C250

The Mercedes-Benz C250, with its long history of superior handling and impeccable craftsmanship, and long list of standard features, delivers an overall driving experience that exceeds expectations for a compact luxury coupe.
