2024 Audi A6

Shoppers who continue to stick with sedans will find that the midsize luxury segment is filled with great options. Furthermore, a lot of the vehicles in the class have been updated recently. BMW recently introduced a fully redesigned 5-Series for the 2024 model year. The 5-Series boasts more high-tech features, a sharper exterior design, and new mild-hybrid engines. The Audi A6 is another stalwart in the segment. While it’s not as new as the 5-Series – the current generation of the A6 came out in 2019 – but it’s still plenty luxurious, comfortable, and high-tech.

In this comparison, we’ll look into the ways the 5-Series compares against the A6 in pricing, features, fuel economy, technology, and cargo capacity to name a winner. Whether you’re looking for a luxury cruise with cutting-edge features or a family-friendly daily driver, we can help you decide which midsize sedan is right for you.

Audi A6 vs. BMW 5-Series Price

2024 BMW 5-Series

Prices for the BMW 5-Series start at $58,895 for the entry-level 530i, while the most expensive BMW 5-Series is the 540i xDrive which costs $65,895. The cheapest Audi A6 is the Premium which starts at $58,395. The most expensive Audi A6 is the Prestige which costs $71,995. Unlike BMW, Audi offers the A6 in a wagon body style called the A6 allroad. Pricing for that vehicle ranges from $69,595 to $74,895.

When comparing two sedan body styles to one another, there’s a price difference of $500 between the 5-Series and A6 with the A6 being the cheaper of the two. At the top of the range, the A6 costs $6,100 more than the 5-Series.

Shoppers looking to lease one of the two midsize sedans will find that the A6 tends to be available with better lease deals than the 5-Series. Additionally, Audi’s financing deals tend to be better than BMW’s.

Audi A6 vs. BMW 5-Series Interior Features

2024 BMW 5-Series Interior

The BMW 5-Series comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery, wood trim, power-adjustable front seats, auto-dimming mirrors, keyless entry, automatic climate control, and a glass moonroof. Available features include extended Merino leather, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, an extra-large glass roof panel, glass controls, and a power rear sunshade.

Shoppers will find that the Audi A6 comes with similar standard features to the 5-Series. Standard features include leathery upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, wood interior trim, and aluminum door sills. Heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, quad-zone automatic climate control, acoustic windows, soft-closing doors, massaging seats, premium leather upholstery, and memory settings for the front passenger seat.

While the A6 is cheaper than the 5-Series, it comes better equipped than the BMW. Main standouts that are standard on the A6, but optional on the 5-Series include leather upholstery and heated front seats. The range-topping A6 is also available with more premium interior features than the 5-Series.

Audi A6 vs. BMW 5-Series Fuel Economy

The base Audi A6 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s rated at 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while all-wheel drive is standard. With the standard 45 TFSI powertrain, the A6 is rated to get up to 26 mpg combined (23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway).

The BMW 530i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The electrified engine makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is rear-wheel drive. With the standard engine, the 5-Series can get up to 30 mpg combined, which breaks down to 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

Audi A6 vs. BMW 5-Series Technology

2024 Audi A6 Dashboard

On the tech front, the Audi A6 comes standard with the automaker’s dual-screen infotainment system. The sedan features a 10.1-inch upper touchscreen, as well as an 8.6-inch lower touchscreen. Other standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, 10 audio speakers, and satellite radio. Available tech features include a wireless charging pad and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

BMW offers the 5-Series with a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen that are integrated into a single piece of curved glass. Other standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a wireless charging pad. Available features include a Bowers and Wilkins audio system.

Audi A6 vs. BMW 5-Series Cargo Space

The Audi A6 sedan provides up to 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space in its trunk. For extra cargo capacity, the A6 allroad is the better choice. It has 30 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place and a total of 64 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.

The BMW 5-Series is only available as a sedan, but it has a roomy trunk for the segment. The 5-Series has up to 18.4 cubic feet of cargo space in its trunk, which bests the A6.

Which is Better: Audi A6 vs. BMW 5-Series?

While the BMW 5-Series is newer than the Audi A6, it loses this comparison. The 5-Series has a gorgeous interior design, is more fuel efficient than the A6, and is available with a more advanced infotainment system than the A6, but BMW made a few missteps that leave us scratching our heads. The 5-Series is pricier than the A6, but doesn’t come as well-equipped. And its high-tech infotainment system is difficult to use. With the 5-Series being a fully redesigned model, shoppers wanting for performance will have to wait until BMW introduces high-performance variants of the sedan, as well.

The Audi A6 isn’t a perfect midsize luxury sedan, but it’s a better overall choice than the 5-Series. It’s more affordable, comes with more standard features, has more available luxury features, comes standard with all-wheel drive, and has a more powerful base engine than the 5-Series. Shoppers wanting some extra versatility with the A6 can opt for the allroad wagon, which has a large cargo area and extra ground clearance.
