The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 just arrived, but it’s not the only Silverado Chevy sells. The automaker is also selling a Silverado 1500 LD, which is effectively a version of the outgoing 2018 model that's been streamlined and repackaged for 2019. Confused? We did some scouting to find the real differences between the two.

What the Silverado 1500 LD Gets Right

The Chevy Silverado 1500 LD is designed as a value pick, although the value is tricky to find. The 1500 LD’s feature set is nearly identical to comparable 2019 Silverado 1500 models. The biggest difference is the inclusion of a standard trailering package, which comes with a hitch platform, wiring harness, and an automatic locking rear differential. The 1500 LD also gets a standard easy-lift tailgate.

The package options on the 1500 LD are also slightly cheaper. Feature inclusion varies slightly, but adding options (like a tonneau cover or heated side mirrors) is cheaper on the 1500 LD.

Despite its kinship with the outgoing model, the Silverado 1500 LD still keeps up in the tech department. It gets the same seven-inch touchscreen as the 1500, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included.

What the Silverado 1500 Gets Right

With a full redesign under its belt, the Silverado 1500 has a more modern look and lineup. Where the Silverado 1500 LD is only available with a double cab and a standard bed (and with only one engine choice to boot), the 1500 is available in all manner of configurations. The range of customization is much broader.

Along with updated looks, the Silverado 1500 lost weight. The new truck is lighter than both the 2018 model and the 1500 LD, a trait that doesn’t go amiss in either the handling or the fuel economy department.

Although we expected the 1500 LD to be the cheaper of the two, it’s not. Chevy may offer incentives that swing the needle in one direction or the other, but based on MSRP, a similarly equipped 2019 Silverado 1500 is actually cheaper than a Silverado 1500 LD. The difference isn’t huge, but the redesigned truck is the more affordable of the two.

Where’s the Value?

There’s an argument to be made for streamlined offerings and value-packed bundles. The Silverado 1500 LD is only available in a few configurations, but it does make features slightly more affordable. On the other hand, the Silverado 1500 is a fresher and lighter platform with a cheaper base price. For specific applications, the 1500 LD might come out on top, but most buyers will find the all-new Silverado 1500 a better buy.

Our Verdict: Chevrolet Silverado 1500

If Chevy is positioning the Silverado 1500 LD as a value pick, it’s hard to understand their pricing logic. The Silverado 1500 is both newer and cheaper, with more options to choose from. In our opinion, opt for the Silverado 1500 and don’t look back.
