Kia and Genesis may be separated by a few corporate relationships, but the Kia Stinger and the Genesis G70 are effectively sister vehicles. They’re both based on the same platform, offer the same engine lineup, and aim squarely at the luxury establishment. But despite their similarities, the two have strikingly different personalities. They’re after different corners of the luxury market, and will appeal to different buyers.

What the Stinger Gets Right

The first victory for the Stinger is price. After destination fees, a base 2019 Kia Stinger starts at $33,895 compared to the 2019 Genesis G70's $35,895 price tag. That's a $2,000 difference that buyers can put to good use elsewhere.

For the money, buyers are getting more car. The Kia Stinger is several inches longer than the G70, which translates into a little extra rear-seat room. To go along with its longer profile, the Stinger is positioned as a touring vehicle. It prioritizes comfort over sportiness, aimed at long journeys more than curvy back roads.

What the G70 Gets Right

Where the Stinger offers a bargain on luxury touring, the G70 is a fresh take on the sports sedan. It has plenty of luxury, but driving dynamics are at the forefront as well. In addition to being shorter than the Stinger, the G70 is also lighter. It will be nimble in the corners in an attempt to take the fight to titans like the BMW 3-Series.

In keeping with its focus on the driver, the G70 is the only one of the pair to offer a manual transmission. A six-speed manual can be optioned with a rear-wheel-drive G70, a combination that enthusiasts will likely appreciate.

Do You Ride in the Front or the Back?

Which of these cars buyers prefer will likely come down to their own preferences. Drivers who prefer sharp responses and enthusiastic response will be drawn to the Genesis G70. Buyers in the market for luxury on a budget will find the answer in the Stinger.

Our Verdict: Kia Stinger

Both offer a compelling value, but the Kia Stinger is the more striking statement. It offers legitimate luxury road presence at an astonishingly low price – a package that ought to have luxury badges quaking in their boots.
