2024 Kia EV9

Kia is throwing its hat into the three-row all-electric SUV segment with the 2024 EV9. With a striking exterior design, three rows of spacious seats, and a relatively affordable starting price tag, the EV9 is set to make a splash.

While the Kia EV9 is new, the Rivian R1S has been on sale since 2022. After a few years on sale, the R1S has earned a reputation for having stellar performance, great off-roading capability, and a luxurious cabin.

If you’re in the market for a three-row electric SUV, choosing between these two models may be difficult. In this brief comparison, we’ll explore how the EV9 and R1S stack up to one another when it comes to pricing, performance, size, range, and technology. In the end, we’ll name a winner that’s the better option for most shoppers.

Kia EV9 vs. Rivian R1S Price

2023 Rivian R1S

Kia EV9 prices start at $56,395, while the most expensive Kia EV9 costs $75,395. Pricing for the cheapest Rivian R1S starts at $79,800. In its most expensive configuration, the Rivian R1S can reach $100,800.

There’s a $23,405 price difference between the Kia EV9 and Rivian R1S when comparing entry-level configurations to one another. At the top of the range, the R1S is $25,405 more expensive than the EV9.

With such a large price difference, it’s not surprising to see that the EV9 tends to be available with better lease deals than the R1S. Additionally, Kia’s financing deals are better than the ones that Rivian offers with the R1S.

Both the Kia EV9 and Rivian R1S are available with multiple powertrains. The EV9 starts off with a single electric motor with 215 horsepower and rear-wheel drive. The SUV is available with two electric motors, all-wheel drive, and up to 379 hp.

The R1S comes with dual electric motors that have up to 533 hp as standard. A performance version of the dual-motor powertrain is available that brings 665 hp. In one of the more unique powertrains on the market, the R1S is available with quad electric motors that are rated at up to 835 hp.

With the available dual-motor configuration, the EV9 can get to 60 mph in as little as five seconds. The R1S, though, in its quad-motor configuration, offers supercar acceleration with a zero-to-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds. Even the base R1S can get to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, making it quicker than the upgraded EV9.

When properly equipped, the EV9 can tow up to 5,000 pounds. That trails the R1S which can tow up to 7,700 pounds.

Rivian offers the R1S with three different battery packs. The Standard Pack brings a range of up to 260 miles, the Large Pack has 352 miles of range, and the Max Pack has 400 miles of range.

Kia EV9 vs. Rivian R1S: Which Is Better?

The Kia EV9 and Rivian R1S may compete in the same segment, but they’re radically different vehicles. The EV9 wins this comparison with its more affordable price tag, user-friendly tech features, a competitive amount of range, and decent performance. It may not blow you away like the R1S, but it’s a family-friendly electric SUV that won’t break the bank.

The R1S is the clear choice for drivers who want a cutting-edge EV with serious performance. It has more powerful powertrains, offers more range, has better off-roading capability, and comes with more high-tech features than the EV9. Unfortunately, it’s incredibly expensive.
