The move to go upstream has seen Mazda introduce new SUVs in the past few years. The Mazda CX-50 was introduced as an all-new model in 2023 and features a more rugged design than most of the automaker’s other SUVs.

With the all-new 2025 CX-70, Mazda has increased its lineup of midsize SUVs with a new two-row option. Closely based on the three-row CX-90, the CX-70 is an identical twin but only has seating for up to five.

Shoppers in a Mazda dealership may find it difficult to choose between the CX-50 and CX-70. In this comparison, we’ll examine how the CX-50 stacks up to the CX-70 when it comes to price, size, passenger capacity, cargo space, interior, and fuel economy to name a winner that’s the better option for most drivers.

Mazda CX-50 vs. CX-70 Price

2025 Mazda CX-70

The cheapest Mazda CX-50 is the S Select trim which starts at $31,720, while the most expensive CX-50 is the Turbo Premium Plus which costs $44,720. Mazda CX-70 prices start at $41,900 and the most expensive Mazda CX-70 S Premium Plus starts at $57,405.

There’s a price difference of $10,180 between the entry-level CX-50 and CX-70. Comparing two range-topping models to one another reveals a price difference of $15,505.

As the more affordable of the two models, the CX-50 tends to be available with better lease deals than the CX-70. Financing deals for the CX-50 are also better than the ones that are available for the CX-70.

Mazda CX-50 vs. CX-70 Specs

The Mazda CX-50 is classified as a compact SUV that has a 110.8-inch wheelbase. It’s 185.8 inches long, 75.6 inches wide, and 63.5 inches tall. The midsize CX-70 has a 122.8-inch wheelbase. It’s 200.8 inches long, 77.6 inches wide, and 68.2 inches tall.

On the road, the CX-70’s extra length and width could make it more difficult to drive and park on tight roads.

Mazda CX-50 vs. CX-70 Passenger Capacity

While the Mazda CX-50 and CX-70 differ in size, they both offer seating for up to five people. The midsize CX-70 is based on the three-row CX-90 that can seat up to eight people, but it isn’t available with a third row.

Mazda CX-50 vs. CX-70 Cargo Space

When it comes to cargo capacity, the compact Mazda CX-50 has 31.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and a total of 56.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats. The larger CX-70 has 39.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 75.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

Because of its midsize body, the CX-70 has a lot more cargo space than the compact CX-50.

Mazda CX-50 vs. CX-70 Interior

2025 Mazda CX-70

Both the Mazda CX-50 and CX-70 have similar interior designs with high-quality materials, an upscale look, and premium convenience features. The CX-50 has a more rugged design with vertically oriented air vents, a chunky, tiered dashboard, and physical controls on the bottom of the center console.

In comparison, the CX-70’s interior has a more refined look with a tiered dashboard, a single expansive row of physical controls, a center display that’s nested into the dash, and a chunky gear shifter.

Despite being larger than the CX-50, the CX-70 has a similar amount of interior space. The CX-70 has slightly more front headroom and rear headroom than the CX-50 but is down on rear legroom.

Mazda CX-50 vs. CX-70 Fuel Economy

2024 Mazda CX-50 Engine

The base Mazda CX-50 comes with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. With the base powertrain, the CX-50 can get up to 27 mpg combined.

Official fuel economy figures for the CX-70 aren’t available yet. The midsize SUV comes with a turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and AWD. If the SUV has the same fuel economy ratings as the CX-90 that it’s based on, it should be able to get up to 25 mpg combined. The CX-70 will be available with a plug-in hybrid engine.

CX-50 vs. CX-70: Which Is Better?

The Mazda CX-70 is an interesting SUV. While it’s larger than the CX-50, it doesn’t come with a lot more interior space and has the same five-passenger seating capacity. It also has a similar interior design to the CX-50. Since the CX-50 is cheaper than the CX-70 and is similar in size, more efficient, and nearly as upscale, we think it’s the better option for most drivers.

The CX-70 may have lost this comparison, but shoppers looking for a premium option with sharp driving dynamics, a silky-smooth six-cylinder engine, and a high-end interior will find that the CX-70 does enough to feel like a different vehicle over the CX-50.
