Mazda has set its focus on expanding its lineup of SUVs recently. The Japanese automaker, which has moved upstream in the past few years, recently launched the all-new midsize CX-90 in 2024. On the heels of the CX-90, Mazda introduced the all-new CX-70. Both the CX-70 and CX-90 are midsize SUVs that share the same platforms, the same powertrains, and a lot of the same features. Their similarities could make choosing between the two models difficult.

In this comparison, we’ll explore how the Mazda CX-70 stacks up to the CX-90 when it comes to price, size, cargo capacity, fuel economy, and towing capacity. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly SUV or a premium option with good performance, we’ll help you choose between the two models.

Mazda CX-70 vs. CX-90 Price

2025 Mazda CX-70

Mazda CX-70 prices start at $41,820 for the Preferred trim and the most expensive Mazda CX-70 costs $58,825. In comparison, the cheapest Mazda CX-90 starts at $39,220 and the most expensive Mazda CX-90 costs $58,825.

There’s a price difference of $2,600 between the base Mazda CX-70 and the entry-level CX-90. At the top of the range, both the CX-70 and CX-90 share the same starting price tags.

As the pricier of the two SUVs, the CX-70 isn’t available with the same affordable lease deals as the CX-90. Lease deals for the CX-90 tend to be better than the ones that are offered on the CX-70. The CX-90 is also available with better financing deals than the CX-70.

Mazda CX-70 vs. CX-90 Size

2024 Mazda CX-90

The Mazda CX-70 and Mazda CX-90 both utilize the same platform and are classified as midsize SUVs. Unsurprisingly, since both SUVs share the same platform, they’re also identical in size. Both the CX-70 and CX-90 are 201.6 inches long, 77.6 inches wide, and 68.2 inches tall. While the CX-70 could turn out to be a tiny bit smaller than the CX-90, the difference will be negligible on the road.

The major difference between the CX-70 and the CX-90 is that the former has two rows of seats and the latter has three rows of seats.

Mazda CX-70 vs. CX-90 Cargo Capacity

When it comes to cargo space, the CX-70 has 39.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and a total of 75.3 cubic feet of total cargo space. The three-row CX-90 has 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, and a total of 74.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

Official fuel economy figures for the 2025 Mazda CX-70 aren’t available yet. With the CX-70 sharing the same powertrains as the CX-90 and being similar in size, we expect both SUVs to have similar fuel economy figures. Official fuel economy figures for the Mazda CX-90 PHEV aren’t available yet.

With the standard turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and all-wheel drive, the CX-90 can get up to 25 mpg combined. The CX-70, which comes with the same base powertrain, should have the same combined fuel economy rating.

Mazda CX-70 vs. CX-90 Towing

Both the Mazda CX-70 and the CX-90 offer up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity when properly equipped.

Mazda CX-70 vs. CX-90: Which Is Better?

Confusingly, the Mazda CX-70 and the CX-90 are practically identical twins to one another. The only major difference is that the CX-70 has two rows of seating and the CX-90 has three rows of seating. Additionally, the CX-90 is slightly cheaper than the CX-70. With this in mind, we think the CX-90 is the better option. While the CX-90 doesn’t have the most spacious third row in the segment, having an extra row of seats for a pinch makes the CX-90 the more versatile option.
