2024 Mazda CX-90

The Mazda CX-90 is the next generation of Mazda’s three-row crossover, the CX-9. It strives for further driver involvement while pushing the entire brand upmarket in design and refinement. The new model brings a more powerful and efficient powertrain with the option of a plug-in hybrid setup, a new design that is uniquely Mazda, and premium quality that aims to warrant its extended stretch into the higher-tier pricing landscape.

The outgoing model, however, isn't being replaced because it’s a poor performer, rather it was simply time for something fresher – which is exactly what the CX-90 represents. Of that is relative to the price you pay and considering the 2023 CX-9’s days are numbered, there are some low-payment opportunities on the table. But to make sure that we're making the best decision, let's take a look at the main categories to figure out which one is more worth the price.

Mazda CX-90 vs. CX-9 Price

The out-going CX-9 model is more likely to receive a good lease deal and attractive loan rates that are rare in today’s market where limited supply drives increased demand, but its new-vehicle discount is also a reflection of Mazda’s completely new three-row SUV coming down the pipeline. The CX-90 starts at $40,970, just $2,845 higher than the CX-9 from 2023, which is priced at $38,125. The price increase may be easy to justify considering it includes an incredible amount of improved features. The base model also benefits from the fact that the CX-90 reaches further upmarket (now over $60,000), which usually translates into a more refined driving experience.

Mazda CX-90 vs. CX-9 Size

2023 Mazda CX-9

The CX-90 measures 200 inches in length which is just over one inch longer than the CX-9, however, its wheelbase has been stretched by nearly eight inches which makes for an attractive short front overhang and extended rear overhang. The wider stance and fenders push the new model to about an inch wider. Inside, the CX-90 offers those in the second row the same generous 39.4 inches of legroom and almost an inch more headroom than before. Third-row shoulder room measures about the same, too, at 53.3 inches. The CX-90 offers slightly more legroom for the third-row passengers as well, although it is only by about an inch (30.4 inches). It remains a tighter space than other crossovers, such as the new Honda Pilot.

Mazda CX-90 vs. CX-9 Interior

The interior of the CX-90 is plainly Mazda means clutter-free and utilizes unique materials and Japanese-inspired design details. The CX-9’s interior design has aged well, however, the sharper corners and simplified surfaces are a reflection of what’s current. The top-tier CX-90 receives unique materials on the doors and dash as well as a unique contrasting stitch pattern.

The CX-90 offers the capability of eight passengers versus the maximum of seven in the CX-9. In both models, the middle bench seat can be swapped for a pair of captain’s chairs, thereby reducing the capacity by one. The higher trims of the CX-90 feature more sculpted third-row seats that reduce the passenger count to six.

Mazda CX-90 vs. CX-9 Cargo Space

The CX-90’s new design avoids the styling trend of sleek rooflines which cut into the rear cargo area. The new model measures a half cubic foot of space more than last year’s model with 15 cubic feet. The gap between the two grows slightly when each of the rear rows is folded, however, its maximum volume of 75 cubic feet is considered a marginal improvement on paper (and still far less than the class leaders) but is a significant accomplishment considering the 17.8 kW battery pack that the plug-in hybrid model carries around.

Mazda CX-90 vs. CX-9 Towing

The CX-9’s meager towing rating of 3,500 pounds has been upgraded to 5,000 pounds in the CX-90. That puts it on par with the crossover segment. The plug-in powertrain is not rated for towing.

Which Is Better: Mazda CX-90 or CX-9?

Since the first generation, the CX-9 has earned high marks and impressed many in the industry with its rewarding driving experience and simplistic approach to premium and the CX-90 continues that effort. The 2023 CX-9 may draw some with its attractive pricing, however, the CX-90 brings a wholly improved package and wins our recommendation.
