The Ford Explorer ST will be slightly more attainable for the 2022 model year thanks to the addition of a new rear-wheel-drive model. Based on data derived from Ford's latest order guide, our analysis finds that the rear-wheel-drive Explorer ST will offer a $2,000 price cut compared to the all-wheel-drive version of the SUV.

For 2022, RWD Explorer ST pricing will start at $53,415 including destination. That's $2,000 cheaper than the AWD Explorer ST, which has an MSRP of $55,415. Just for reference, the 2021 Explorer ST, which is only available with all-wheel drive, currently has a price tag of $55,240 before factoring in any incentives.

RWD Explorers are generally $2,000 cheaper than versions with AWD, so the lower MSRP shouldn't be too surprising. Both offer the same 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine rated at 400 hp with 415 lb-ft of torque. The addition of a RWD option could be welcome news for buyers who may not want to pay for AWD capability.

Ford has greatly expanded its lineup of ST-badged Explorers. At the lower end of the spectrum, a new ST-Line trim will offer similar looks but fewer performance features and will be $7,570 cheaper than the ST. Between the ST-Line and ST, there's also the Explorer Enthusiast ST with ST power but less standard tech.

It appears as though Ford is preparing to offer an ST flavor for every Explorer shopper. Considering the Explorer remains the brand's bestselling SUV, we think the greater range of choices could be a good thing for consumers looking to find the right balance of performance and affordability. And, of course, the coolness factor.

If you're looking for an Explorer ST deal, you may have a tough time. Apart from an inventory shortage, the brand canceled most rebates in June. At the moment, 2021 Explorers offer just a $1,000 trade-in assistance incentive plus 0% financing, although a closer look finds that the APR deal is limited to just 36 months.
