2023 Kia EV6 May Get A Huge Price Cut [Confirmed]

Update #2 (4:54 pm) Kia spokesman James Hope confirmed our findings, adding "Kia is following the market and other EVs sellers such as VW (ID.4) are offering shorter range models in relatively limited volume. Kia is doing the same in the Western Region only. Customers who don’t require the longer range appreciate the value." As a result, this cheaper base model 2023 EV6 Light is being geographically limited to the West Coast. Kia's incentive bulletin lists the states of AK, AZ, CA, HI, ID, MT, NV, OR, UT, and WA.

Update #1 (11:33 am): Citrus Motors Kia, a dealer in Ontario, CA, confirmed for us today that they received a 2023 EV6 Light in stock. We were able to obtain a copy of the window sticker, which we've added below with a screenshot of the listing. The sticker price for the 2023 EV6 Light is $43,925, $1,230 more than last year's MSRP of $42,695. The Light is a Standard Range model with 232 miles of range. That's the same as the Light's previous specs but substantially less than the 310-mile range of the 2023 EV6 Wind but slightly better than the 220-mile IONIQ 5 SE Standard Range.

The popular Kia EV6 could be getting a substantial price cut amid an ongoing price war among electric car manufacturers. According to a bulletin sent to dealers, Kia appears to have brought back the EV6 Light, the base model trim that was discontinued for 2023. Here's what we know so far.

Late last year, Kia's cheapest EV6 was discontinued for 2023, resulting in a whopping $7,100 increase in the model's base price. At the time, Kia spokesperson James Hope told CarsDirect that the approach offered a way for consumers to get "greater range and sought-after standard features."

With a starting price of $50,025 with destination, the Kia EV6 is currently $7,240 more expensive than the cheapest Hyundai IONIQ 5 ($42,785). Although Kia didn't respond to our multiple requests for comment, the company's latest lease incentives issued on Tuesday do list the 2023 EV6 Light.

2023 Kia EV6 Light For Sale Listing

While we don't have official pricing yet, we do know that Kia is offering a $7,500 lease incentive on the 2023 EV6 Light. Based on our analysis, that's the same discount that you'll find on every other EV6 trim. If Kia is really bringing back the EV6 Light, this could result in some big changes.

After the EV6's base price went above $45,000 last year, all versions of the EV became ineligible for California's $2,000 Clean Vehicle Rebate. If Kia can manage to bring the model's base price back below the $45,000 MSRP cap, all EV6 buyers in the Golden State may be able to benefit.

When it was last available, the 2022 Kia EV6 Light started at just over $42,000. If the automaker does bring back the EV6 Light, it could significantly narrow the gap in price with the Tesla Model 3, which currently starts at $41,630. If so, both Kia and Hyundai could be set to put pressure on Tesla.

Yesterday, Hyundai slashed EV prices on the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 by $70 a month. The move enabled Hyundai to undercut Tesla's cheapest Model 3 lease right before the Memorial Day holiday. We'll have to wait for official word from Kia on whether or not the brand really plans to cut EV6 prices.
