Although the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey will likely be felt for months in parts of Texas and Louisiana, residents needing to replace an automobile may be eligible for assistance. Starting today, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is offering its own form of disaster relief with a small additional car discount for those affected.

Here's an overview of how it works and who's eligible.

Editor's Note: As of September 6, FCA has issued a revised assistance program involving Employee Pricing. Please see our updated coverage for more information.

Offer Details

Beginning August 28, official bulletins show that residents from certain areas of Texas and Louisiana will be eligible for an extra $500 off their next car or truck. To get the discount, simply bring a copy of an insurance claim form reflecting damage to an existing car, truck or SUV as a result of Harvey. The bonus can be combined with most other cash, finance or lease deals.

New vehicles eligible for the bonus include most of the 2017 and 2018 lineups from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM, FIAT and Alfa Romeo. From the capable RAM 1500 to the versatile Chrysler Pacifica, there are only a handful of exclusions. Notable exceptions include the Jeep Wrangler, SRT models, Chrysler 200, Dodge Viper and Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Eligible Texas counties include: Aransas, Austin, Bee, Brazoria, Calhoun, Chambers, Colorado, Duval, Fort Bend, Galveston, Hardin, Harris, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Liberty, Live Oak, Matagorda, Montgomery, Newton, Nueces, Orange, Polk, Refugio, San Jacinto, San Patricio, Trinity, Tyler, Victoria, Walker, Waller, Washington and Wharton.

Eligible Louisiana counties include: Acadia, Allen, Avoyelles, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Evangeline, Grant, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Rapides, Saint Landry, Saint Martin, Vermillion and Vernon.

The offer is set to run through January 2, 2018.

Our Take

Although a $500 discount seems like a relatively insignificant amount compared to the immense cost of rebuilding that many families will face, it's worth noting that most automakers don't offer any type of special assistance.

Our records show the last time Fiat Chrysler offered something like this was in August of last year as the result of intense flooding in Louisiana. Later in the year, Ford offered a $500 bonus in parts of Florida affected by Hurricane Matthew.

If you're planning on working through your insurance to replace a vehicle, this latest offer may be worth knowing about. We may see a similar offer debut from Ford across most of its lineup, so stay tuned.
