If you're thinking of buying a new Ford, you may want to do so sooner rather than later. That's because recent dealer incentive bulletins appear to indicate that the automaker is planning to cut rebates by as much as 83% on August 3.

While Ford incentives vary by region, we're seeing mounting evidence of a big change once a number of current offers end on August 2. Based on our analysis, this could have a significant effect on Ford vehicle prices & affordability.

In New York, the brand will cut a $3,000 trade-in assistance incentive on the 2021 Escape crossover to just $500 on August 3, an 83% decrease. In California, a $2,500 trade-in discount on the F-150 will drop to $1,000, a 60% cut.

We're seeing similar changes on certain models in places like Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Texas, and others. The downside is that we don't know if Ford plans to offset these changes with some other type of incentive.

We think the odds of that happening are slim. That's because Ford deliberately cut the number of rebates it offered a month ago to simplify offers based on dealer feedback. Doing so had a huge effect on consumers.

Without a car to trade-in, the change effectively eliminated many buyers' ability to get a discount from the manufacturer. At the moment, we know that the program will continue through at least September 30.

It's still too early to know if deals could improve for Labor Day on September 6. However, we already know that July Fourth turned out to be a major bust compared to past holidays amidst an industrywide inventory shortage.

Thinking of buying a Ford? You may want to consider placing a special order. That's because Ford doubled its discount on cars not in stock to $1,000. If you can afford to wait, you can even combine the deal with other incentives.
