With millions of affected vehicles across 14 manufacturers, the Takata Airbag Recall has been one of the most inflammatory vehicle quality issues of the past year. To prevent customers from defecting to other brands, Honda and its luxury brand, Acura, are rolling out new loyalty programs for lessees.

The offers, dubbed Honda Promise and Acura Advantage, involve lease extensions and vehicle discounts for affected customers. So what do the offers entail? And who's eligible? Here's what you need to know.

Deal overview

Current Honda and Acura lessees with an affected vehicle are eligible for a 6 month extension of current lease contracts. The program was quietly rolled out last month and is available to customers with leases maturing between February 1 and June 30, 2016.

As a bonus, Honda lessees opting for the extension will be eligible for a Honda Promise certificate worth $500 toward the financing or lease of a new Honda model. Similarly, Acura lessees will be eligible for an Acura Advantage certificate worth $1,000.

Honda lessees will get the added benefit of a complimentary Honda Care Vehicle Service Contract with component coverage, roadside assistance and more. It will activate with the issuance of a Honda Promise certificate. The actual term of coverage will be based on the date and miles of the certificate issued. The programs are set to run through February 28, 2017.

Our take

For shoppers currently leasing an affected vehicle, the Honda Promise and Acura Advantage programs offer some flexibility while the recall situation gets resolved. If you like your current lease and aren't in a hurry, there's also the added benefit of securing a modest discount on your next car.

Both programs will be compatible with nearly all special offers like promotional leases and both military and college discounts. Notable exclusions include other loyalty discounts, conquest cash incentives and zero due at signing lease specials.

To determine vehicle eligibility, dedicated websites have been established with a VIN lookup tool at recalls.honda.com and recalls.acura.com. Be sure to check with your local dealer to confirm full program rules and restrictions.
