The United States has adopted electric vehicles as the environmentally friendly option to gas-powered vehicles. That hasn’t stopped a few automakers from selling hydrogen vehicles, though. The Hyundai Nexo, one of just two hydrogen cars on sale, is now available with an enormous discount worth as much as $35,000.

According to a bulletin that Hyundai sent dealers last week, the 2023 Hyundai Nexo is now available with a $35,000 discount in the form of bonus cash. Additionally, the hydrogen-powered vehicle is available with 0% financing for 72 months. This is the largest discount on the Nexo we’ve ever seen and better than last month’s deal. The Nexo was previously available with a $33,000 discount plus 0% financing for 72 months.

Hyundai hasn’t announced pricing for the 2024 Nexo yet, but the 2023 model starts at $61,470 and goes up to $64,920. With the maximum discount, consumers can potentially buy a Nexo for around $27,000. That means shoppers could potentially get the Nexo for the same price as the subcompact Hyundai Kona.

The new $35,000 discount for the Hyundai Nexo comes on the heels of a similar discount that Toyota introduced for the Mirai, the other hydrogen-powered car sale. A few weeks ago, Toyota introduced a new rebate on the Mirai worth up to $40,000 off MSRP. With the discount, shoppers can get the Mirai for approximately $27,000.

Interestingly, the Nexo, just like the Mirai, is way better for shoppers to buy than lease. While Hyundai is offering the Nexo with $35,000 in bonus cash, the hydrogen SUV is only available with $3,000 in lease cash for the range-topping Limited trim. The base Blue trim is available with up to $7,500 in lease cash. By leasing the Nexo instead of purchasing it, shoppers could miss out on as much as $32,000 in savings.

While Hyundai is offering the Nexo with a hefty discount, shoppers may have trouble finding a model on sale because of the SUV’s limited availability. Additionally, finding a place to refill the Nexo’s hydrogen tank could be difficult.

In the middle of February, Shell Hydrogen announced that it was closing all seven of its hydrogen light-duty passenger fueling stations in California. Nearly all of the available hydrogen stations in the U.S. are located in California. With Shell Hydrogen closing all of its passenger fueling stations in the state and pulling back plans to build and operate 48 new light-duty hydrogen fueling stations in the state, one has to wonder about the longevity of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the U.S.
