At CarsDirect, we're used to seeing deals around holidays. However, new offers from Hyundai made us do a double-take. As of May 13, the automaker doubled and even tripled rebates on some of their top cars and crossovers. Interestingly, the offers aren't even on the oldest cars- some of the biggest changes are on 2016 models. Here's what you need to know.

Pushing hard on the Elantra

Hyundai is making a big push on the Elantra. 2015 models aren't even sold out and the automaker is tripling incentives from $500 to $1,500. Even better, this can be combined with 1.9% financing for up to 60 months and a 90-day deferred payment offer.

Competitors aren't even close to offering the same deal. You could buy a Toyota Corolla, but the Elantra is more powerful, gets nearly identical fuel economy, and gets three times the rebates right now. Prefer a hatchback? Good news- the 2016 Elantra GT gets the same offers.

A surprise on the Santa Fe Sport

Although the Santa Fe Sport and its 7-passenger alternative, the Santa Fe, rank highly in comparison tests, deals have been disappointing. Offers have essentially been flat for months.

For Memorial Day, rebates have been doubled to $1,000. In addition, if you own a competing brand you can get an extra $750, bringing your total savings to $1,750 before dealer discounts.

Tucson gets in on the action

If you prefer a small crossover, the Tucson ranks well due to a wealth of standard features. The bad news? It almost never gets special deals.

For Memorial Day, Hyundai added a $500 bonus on all Tucson trims. Even better, current Hyundai owners can boost their savings to $1,000 with a loyalty credit.

Our take

We think Hyundai's holiday deals are worth a close look. Changes on models like the Santa Fe Sport and Tucson are truly unusual given what we're used to seeing. If you're looking to score some extra savings, it's a great time to buy a Hyundai.
