Mercedes-Benz is firing on all cylinders with an array of unusual programs that can potentially save you thousands this month. But you probably won't hear about the best discounts because they aren't being advertised.

Interestingly, sources reveal the automaker is putting limits on the savings that dealers can advertise, in some cases by as much as half. Here's what you need to know.

Luxury battle

The luxury segment is incredibly competitive. Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, and Lexus are climbing over each other in a battle to become number one.

Luxury automakers tend to protect their brands by not advertising big rebates. You'll see phrases like "outstanding offers" but never the rebates offered by mainstream brands. That doesn't mean the deals aren't there, however.

This month, Mercedes-Benz is using an unusual mix of certificate offers that can equate to thousands off MSRP. In addition, an analysis of the programs reveals that the best offers are not being advertised.

How certificates work

Certificates are unlike most normal incentives. Instead of a rebate, dealers are allocated a set number of certificate codes based on retail sales. This is effectively geared to reward sales volume.

Each dealer uses their own discretion to pass along the discounts. Since each dealer posts different sales numbers, this is a case where it can really pay off to obtain quotes from multiple dealers. In major metro areas, we find larger dealers tend to be especially generous with this type of program.

What this looks like

The B Electric Drive tops our ranking with the largest percentage off MSRP, but we're most impressed by $3,000 in potential savings on the E350. This is all less straightforward than you might think, however.

Our analysis revealed that Mercedes-Benz is limiting the advertised savings on the E350 to $2,000. In another case, the C300 Sedan has $2,000 in available savings but only half that amount- $1,000, is being advertised.

We've listed the best offers for 2015 models below. Here you'll see not only the advertised savings but the full amounts as well, ranked by savings off MSRP. The offers run through April 30 and can be combined with advertised lease deals.

Model MSRP Advertised Amount Full Certificate Amount Max % Off MSRP
B Electric Drive $42,375 Not Advertised $3,000 7.1%
E350 Sedan $53,225 $2,000 $3,000 5.6%
SLK250 $44,875 $2,000 $2,500 5.6%
C300 Sedan $39,325 $1,000 $2,000 5.1%
SL400 $84,925 $3,500 $3,500 4.1%
S550 Sedan $95,325 Not Advertised $3,000 3.1%
ML350 $49,225 $1,500 $1,500 3.0%
GLK350 $38,825 Not Advertised $1,000 2.6%
GL450 $66,125 Not Advertised $1,000 1.5%
CLA250 (AWD) $34,425 Not Advertised $500 1.5%

Our take

With so much going on this month with Mercedes-Benz, we think this is an unusually good time to buy. In some cases, unadvertised offers can equate to thousands in savings before dealer discounts. You may not see all of the offers advertised on TV commercials or on the radio but they're out there and meant to sell more cars in April.
